There’s a reason Frankincense has been called the "king of oils."
But beyond ancient tradition, modern science is confirming what generations intuitively knew:
Frankincense has a powerful impact on the brain.

Frankincense contains compounds like α-pinene and incensole acetate, which have been shown in studies to:
- Support healthy cognitive function
- Cross the blood-brain barrier to influence mood and neurochemistry
- Promote cellular repair and reduce neuroinflammation
- Activate brain regions tied to memory, focus, and emotional processing

In Therapeutic Practice:
Frankincense is especially supportive when used in sessions focused on:
+ Grief & trauma processing – Promotes emotional grounding and spiritual connection
+ Mindfulness & body awareness – Enhances present-moment focus and breathwork
+ Neuroplasticity & integration – Aids in deepening new neural pathways through calm engagement

Try This with Clients:
Invite clients to breathe in Frankincense during a grounding exercise or body scan.
Watch as they soften into presence — it’s often described as “coming home to the body.”

This is more than scent.
It’s support for brain health, nervous system regulation, and therapeutic depth.

Sometimes we see a great recipe or blend containing an essential oil we don’t have. I hope this list serves as a great resource for you to use a substitute you do have!

A few things to keep in mind:

🌿The substitutes in this list either contain similar beneficial properties or are similar in aroma (such as aroma category or aroma note).

🌿When substituting essential oils in skin care, it is important to be aware of your skin type and what essential oils are appropriate for use. (For example, if you have oily skin, you likely won’t want to be using sandalwood or rose in your face serum)

🌿Be aware of photosensitive essential oils when substituting essential oils for topical use.

🌿When using aromatherapy for emotions and stress support it is always best to use an essential oil you find pleasant in aroma. We all have olfactory likes and dislikes and our preferences are incredibly subjective and individualized based on our memory scent associations, perceptions and expectations.

Hope this is helpful for you! 💛
