I’m writing my next book and I’ve spent the past few weeks studying the development of the brain in our childhood— and yes don’t worry our brain can change throughout life (ah, neuroplasticity.

I created this post because we like to think about a partners height, their job, and the list goes on. But nothing is more important for the development of a child than how that partner copes with stressful emotional states.

Here’s some signs a person can regulate their nervous system:

1. When things are tough, they can talk about it. They might need space (totally fine) but they’re able to express how they feel and listen to you do the same.

2. They apologize and can repair: we all have moments we regret. We all hurt the people we love. But a partner who can regulate their nervous system can own it and apologize after— and commit to doing better.

3. They have a high frustration tolerance: they can be visibly frustrated, but they can keep moving and accept uncomfortable feelings. Their high frustration tolerance makes them more resilient.

4. They have some type of movement in their life: walking, biking, lifting— anything that provides them with a consistent sympathetic (fight or flight release).

5. They know when to let it go: they know when an issue has been talked to death, or when it’s not worth fighting over.

6. They seek solutions: they seek solutions where you can both feel heard.

7. They express what they feel and don’t expect you to read their mind.

8. Their anger is safe.

9. When things don’t go their way or they get disappointed, they’re affected but they don’t control the emotional climate of the home.

10. They’re always open for feedback from you, even if it’s not comfortable— they want to hear how you actually feel
