Jay Huston hasn’t been able to hear most of his life, with the exception of the ringing in his ears. But the treatment he’s received recently has changed that.

A patient recently came in for hearing loss, but at the end of the appointment mentioned mild vertigo. Because I provide both hearing and balance care, I was able to perform testing and start treatment immediately. What started as a hearing visit turned into something more important—helping him find relief from dizziness. This is the difference between a hearing aid office and a comprehensive audiology clinic like Sound On Audiology.

Just had a baby?

One of the most important early checks is your baby’s hearing. Even mild hearing loss can impact speech and development if it goes unnoticed.

The good news? Screenings are quick, gentle, and give you peace of mind.

We’re now offering newborn hearing screenings right here in Derby at Sound On Audiology.

Did you know menopause may impact hearing?

Hormonal changes can affect the inner ear and may lead to hearing changes or tinnitus for some women. If you’ve noticed your hearing isn’t what it used to be, it may be worth getting it checked.

What does tinnitus sound like?

Many people assume tinnitus is just “ringing in the ears,” but I’ve heard patients describe it in many different ways.

Tinnitus is different for everyone, and understanding what you're hearing can be the first step toward finding relief.

My daughter recently got invited to a birthday party, and the room was full of excited kids, loud voices, and lots of echo. Concrete walls, high ceilings, and screaming girls are basically the perfect recipe for terrible acoustics.

Even the best hearing aids can struggle in environments like this because sound bounces everywhere.

So I used a partner microphone.

I clipped it onto my daughter so her voice streamed directly to my hearing aids. Suddenly, I could hear her clear as day, even with all the noise around us.

Technology like this can make a huge difference in noisy environments. It allowed me to stay connected with her and be the kind of mom I want to be — present, engaged, and part of the moment.

Sometimes hearing better isn’t just about hearing aids.
It’s about using the right tools for the environment.

Kansas storms can roll in fast 🌩️

The photo in this post was actually taken above our house during a storm. My husband snapped it as the clouds started rolling in — a reminder of just how intense Kansas weather can be.

For people who wear hearing aids, storms can bring a few extra challenges: power outages, difficulty hearing sirens, and moisture that can affect devices. I put together a few quick tips to help hearing aid users stay prepared during severe weather.

Stay safe out there tonight, Kansas!

Today is World Hearing Day- a reminder that hearing health is brain health 🧠 👂

Untreated hearing loss can impact communication, confidence and even cognitive function overtime. If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, let’s talk. Early treatment makes a difference!

Most people don’t lose their hearing all at once.
It happens slowly… so slowly that you may not even notice at first.

You may still hear sounds — but conversations become harder.
Restaurants feel exhausting.
You start saying “what?” more often.
The TV volume keeps creeping up.

Many people wait years before getting their hearing checked.

The good news? Hearing loss is very treatable — and modern solutions are far more comfortable and discreet than most people expect.

If any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time for a hearing evaluation.
