Did you know menopause may impact hearing?

Hormonal changes can affect the inner ear and may lead to hearing changes or tinnitus for some women. If you’ve noticed your hearing isn’t what it used to be, it may be worth getting it checked.

What does tinnitus sound like?

Many people assume tinnitus is just “ringing in the ears,” but I’ve heard patients describe it in many different ways.

Tinnitus is different for everyone, and understanding what you're hearing can be the first step toward finding relief.

My daughter recently got invited to a birthday party, and the room was full of excited kids, loud voices, and lots of echo. Concrete walls, high ceilings, and screaming girls are basically the perfect recipe for terrible acoustics.

Even the best hearing aids can struggle in environments like this because sound bounces everywhere.

So I used a partner microphone.

I clipped it onto my daughter so her voice streamed directly to my hearing aids. Suddenly, I could hear her clear as day, even with all the noise around us.

Technology like this can make a huge difference in noisy environments. It allowed me to stay connected with her and be the kind of mom I want to be — present, engaged, and part of the moment.

Sometimes hearing better isn’t just about hearing aids.
It’s about using the right tools for the environment.

Kansas storms can roll in fast 🌩️

The photo in this post was actually taken above our house during a storm. My husband snapped it as the clouds started rolling in — a reminder of just how intense Kansas weather can be.

For people who wear hearing aids, storms can bring a few extra challenges: power outages, difficulty hearing sirens, and moisture that can affect devices. I put together a few quick tips to help hearing aid users stay prepared during severe weather.

Stay safe out there tonight, Kansas!

Today is World Hearing Day- a reminder that hearing health is brain health 🧠 👂

Untreated hearing loss can impact communication, confidence and even cognitive function overtime. If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, let’s talk. Early treatment makes a difference!

Most people don’t lose their hearing all at once.
It happens slowly… so slowly that you may not even notice at first.

You may still hear sounds — but conversations become harder.
Restaurants feel exhausting.
You start saying “what?” more often.
The TV volume keeps creeping up.

Many people wait years before getting their hearing checked.

The good news? Hearing loss is very treatable — and modern solutions are far more comfortable and discreet than most people expect.

If any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time for a hearing evaluation.

One of the most common questions I get is: “How young can you test hearing? Can you test babies?”

The answer is — absolutely YES.

At Sound On Audiology, we have specialized equipment designed specifically to evaluate hearing in infants, toddlers, and young children, even when they’re too little to respond or communicate.

Early hearing testing is incredibly important, because hearing plays a critical role in speech, language, learning, and overall development.

This photo is from when my own son was just 3 months old — and yes, I tested his hearing too! Even as an audiologist, I wanted that peace of mind that everything was developing as it should.

If you ever have concerns about your child’s hearing, speech, or responsiveness to sound, don’t wait. We can evaluate hearing at any age!

When I was three, a severe virus and high fever took my hearing and damaged my balance system so badly I could barely walk. The most effective therapy I received wasn’t in a clinic — it was dance. It helped retrain my body, rebuild my balance, and gave me confidence in movement again.

If you struggle with balance, dance can be a powerful (and fun) way to improve stability and coordination. I highly recommend Set Free Dance Studios in Derby and Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts BCAPA in Newton. While they primarily offer children’s classes, adult classes may be available if there’s enough interest!

When your son says their ear hurts…you don’t grab Tylenol, you grab the equipment. Occupational hazard of having an audiologist mom…no ear complaint goes untested! He had pressure build up which I was able to treat quickly before it turned into a full blown ear infection! 😅
