Back in 2015 my family met a man named Forrest E. Rhodes. He was an escapee from Derby Health & Rehab assisted living center. He would always come back within about an hour. But he liked to get outside for some exercise on his electric scooter. He enjoyed painting on the side and gifted my family with the two works featured here. I am doubtful that Forrest is still around these parts today. But his contribution to the arts is still around and proves you don't have to be the most talented, just friendly and generous.

Zavier strikes again! I happed to catch his work at the rec center about a week ago. I'm still amazed at his skill using dry erase markers. And for a black and white plate, the Five Nights crew makes for a good, gothic subject.

As promised in our March post, here is something with more depth for the train lovers out there (or foamers as my engineer friend refers to them). Here we have the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad that runs from Antonio, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico, photographed by Barney Tull. Sounds like a very scenic region for a ride.

Our past artist contributor, Jeff Gowen, recently won a blue ribbon at the Kansas State Fair. As you probably know from past posts, Jeff has painted works from all corners of the animal kingdom and typically uses acrylic. This was the first year he submitted an entry. Keep up the nice work Jeff.

Time for another piece by Zavier. The colors here just seem to flow from the background right into the subject. Maybe that is the difference of "painting" verses "drawing." I'm not skilled enough to know. Regardless, Zavier is talented at both.

Another selection from Barney Tull's portfolio. It seemed quite fitting with the rainy summer we are experiencing. Barney did not tell me where the photograph was taken. But I'm betting it's Gilligan's Island.

Sydney gave us this thank you note several weeks ago. We were excited to hear that she is interested in becoming a dental hygienist someday. What really makes us happy is when someone enjoys coming to the dentist. Sydney and her twin sister are definitely some of our favorite people to visit with. We hope to see you soon and we will have plenty of cinnamon toothpaste on hand. Have a great summer.

I have been excited to display some pieces by Zavier working with one of his more common mediums. As you could tell from his first piece, he is good with comic characters. This one might be a little scarry for some. But this picture, like the ones done on a white board, really showcase his ability to use the background color into the image. I guess sometimes you draw by not drawing. Good use of color here. But wait until we show you his next piece. Or check out his Instagram page:

I am very excited to exhibit a well known local artist on our page this month, Derby photographer, Barney Tull. I have been acquainted with Barney for a number of years after my wife brought him to my attention. I love Kansas landscapes. Barney has presented us with one here from Inman, Kansas. Typically, I fall for the blue sky in these pictures. But Barney managed to capture those prairie clouds in a gray sky, along with the sun breaking through. And if the train is your chief interest, keep following us. Mr Tull has sent me several pieces for the coming months.

I found some amazing creations while I was swimming at the Derby Rec pool. I had never met an artist who is skilled in the medium of dry erase makers. Then I was introduced to Zavier, a recent Derby High School graduate. He obviously has an interest in Marvel and anime. I really flipped for this Transformers Soundwave piece. You got to love the 80s. Zavier typically works with more traditional sketching supplies. You can check out his other projects on his Instagram:
