Meet Brooke Turek, DO!

Dr. Turek spent time in Nkoaranga, Tanzania as an IMSF Global Health Scholar.

"During my international rotation, I was based in a hospital that served a predominantly rural and underserved population. Many patients had limited access to reliable transportation, essential medications, and specialized care. These demographic factors had a significant impact on my clinical experience. Patients often presented with advanced stages of illness, due to delays in seeking care stemming from distance, financial constraints, etc. Not speaking the local language meant I relied heavily on local healthcare professionals to facilitate effective communication and build trust. Providing care in this setting deepened my appreciation for community-based health interventions and the importance of cultural humility. It also reinforced my commitment to a career focused on global health equity and addressing disparities in access to care."

Meet Devin Moffat, DO!

Dr. Moffat spent time in Lima, Peru as an IMSF Global Health Scholar.

"I worked at the hospital "Jose Casimiro Ulloa" which is renowned emergency hospital that dealt strictly with emergency situations. There were multiple parts to the hospital including an urgent care area, trauma bay,adult and pediatric emergency rooms, surgery center and multiple operating rooms, pt observation area, imaging, general wards area, and an ICU area. I was doing an emergency medicine rotation there and spent time floating between the urgent care area, adult and pediatric emergency rooms, and trauma bay. Because I speak Spanish, I was allowed to take lead in taking pt histories and physicals (with supervision) and also perform minor procedures. Some of my favorite parts were talking with and getting to know the doctors, nurses, and residents there--they were incredibly knowledgeable and very interested in helping me learn about the intricacies of health care in Peru."

Meet Allison Dodds!

Allison spent time in Lusaka, Zambia as an IMSF Global Health Scholar.

"Through my experiences interacting with patients and their families, I learned about barriers to care and stigma within the community that women of children with spina bifida can face. Regarding practicing cultural humility, I learned about history, culture, and traditions within the region. This experience stressed the importance of caring for the collective beyond just oneself and how much we can learn from one another. Overall, this was an incredible experience, and I am so grateful for everyone’s support and kindness throughout."
