What does it take to turn a health scare into a success story?

For Dawn (pictured center left), it started with a routine physical. When her A1C came back in the prediabetes range, her doctor recommended MercyOne’s Prevent T2 Program—and she decided to give it a try.

Nine months later, Dawn has lost 74 pounds, her A1C is back to normal, and she’s loving staying active—especially playing pickleball! 🏓

“I’d say thanks for the kick I needed to get serious about weight loss and get moving.”

More than 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes—and most don’t know it.

When he swallowed food, 17-year-old Trevor would choke and pound on his chest to get it unstuck on the way down. A single bite could take two to three minutes to swallow. Often the food would come back up, so he would eat in isolation and never in the school cafeteria. At one point, he was terrified. He told his mom, “I need to go to the hospital. I’m going to die.”

After months of growing discomfort and 30 pounds lost, Trevor was diagnosed with a rare disease of the esophagus. MercyOne Des Moines Pediatric Gastroenterology Care used first-in-Des Moines pediatric technology to diagnose him and get him the treatment he needed. Thanks to Dr. Zaghloul, eating is enjoyable for Trevor again.

In 2021, life with two toddlers felt typical for the Borys family. Like many parents, they assumed the challenges they faced were simply part of early childhood. However, in December 2023, the family sensed something more was going on.

Their son James was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 2 — just eight months before kindergarten. Instead of despair, the diagnosis brought clarity and a path forward.

By February 2024, James began speech and occupational therapy at MercyOne. Early sessions were challenging, but therapists met him where he was, helping him build communication, flexibility and coping skills. Within months, his behavior improved, and daily routines became easier for the entire family.

Around the same time, the family learned that their daughter Ellie also needed support. After an ADHD diagnosis, she began occupational therapy at MercyOne and made progress with regulation and social engagement.

By August 2024, James met his developmental goals and was discharged from therapy. That fall, he started kindergarten alongside his peers. Within weeks, he met his communication goals and increased his classroom participation.

With the right support, James didn’t just start kindergarten — he thrived. > https://bit.ly/3Mdojvp

Our Story

MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit Catholic hospital campuses, with a total of 875 beds, along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care, pediatric, internal medicine and specialty clinics. Call us (515) 247-3121 For more than 100 years MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center has been an outstanding presence in the health care community of Iowa. The hospital has been recognized for its many firsts: the first permanent hospital in Des Moines; the first isotope laboratory in Polk County; the first heart transplant performed in Central Iowa, and the first hospital in the WORLD to have a bi-lateral cardiac catheterization laboratory.

In 1893 Des Moines’ population of 52,000 was growing quickly. On Dec. 8 of that year Mercy Hospital opened its doors at Hoyt Sherman Place on Woodland Avenue. The hospital had two private rooms and a ward for five patients. Patients were charged between $2.50 and $6 per day with an additional fee of two dollars to five dollars for surgery.

From this modest start by six nuns, MercyOne Des Moines has evolved into a $900 million, 802-bed medical center, located on two campuses with more than 7,000 employees. MercyOne was started by the Sisters of Mercy, an order founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. Sixteen years later the Sisters established the first hospital in the United States and, by the 1890s, had founded more than 30 hospitals in this country, including MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.
