“I lost over 120 pounds — but that number only makes sense when you know where it started.”

For Bryon, the decision to change his life came after witnessing the devastating effects of chronic illness in his family. Those experiences became a wake‑up call to stop waiting for “someday” and choose his health.

His journey began with Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) surgery at MercyOne Des Moines Bariatric Surgery, a turning point both physically and emotionally. Over time, weight loss came through structure and learning how to live in a new body — but the path wasn’t linear.

Life, stress, mental health and biology all played a role and Bryon experienced weight regain. Later, GLP‑1 medication helped him regain momentum — not as a shortcut, but as a tool alongside mindful eating, movement and mental health support.

Bryon’s takeaway is simple: lasting change isn’t about shame or perfection. It’s about compassion, consistency — and accepting help.

It began with a colonoscopy.

At 39, Amy was healthy and six years away from the recommended screening age — until she was turned away from donating blood because of low iron. That follow-up led to a colonoscopy and a diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer and a rare genetic condition.

No family history. No obvious warning signs.

That test changed everything —and later led to the discovery of liver cancer, too.

Read Amy’s story — it started with a colonoscopy. > https://bit.ly/4kk0leD

Our Story

MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit Catholic hospital campuses, with a total of 875 beds, along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care, pediatric, internal medicine and specialty clinics. Call us (515) 247-3121 For more than 100 years MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center has been an outstanding presence in the health care community of Iowa. The hospital has been recognized for its many firsts: the first permanent hospital in Des Moines; the first isotope laboratory in Polk County; the first heart transplant performed in Central Iowa, and the first hospital in the WORLD to have a bi-lateral cardiac catheterization laboratory.

In 1893 Des Moines’ population of 52,000 was growing quickly. On Dec. 8 of that year Mercy Hospital opened its doors at Hoyt Sherman Place on Woodland Avenue. The hospital had two private rooms and a ward for five patients. Patients were charged between $2.50 and $6 per day with an additional fee of two dollars to five dollars for surgery.

From this modest start by six nuns, MercyOne Des Moines has evolved into a $900 million, 802-bed medical center, located on two campuses with more than 7,000 employees. MercyOne was started by the Sisters of Mercy, an order founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. Sixteen years later the Sisters established the first hospital in the United States and, by the 1890s, had founded more than 30 hospitals in this country, including MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.
