10:45AM THURSDAY UPDATE: The National Weather Service has upgraded portions of the winter weather advisory to a winter storm warning. Snowfall amounts within the warning area are expected to range from 5 to 8 inches. This warning goes into effect as early as 3PM this afternoon and will be in effect through 6AM Friday.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect on either side of this warning area. Snowfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches will be possible within the advisory areas.

⚠️ EXTREME COLD CAN DO WEIRD THINGS ⚠️
As temperatures crash well below zero, you may hear loud bangs, cracks, or booms outside.
No, it’s not transformers blowing or anything exploding.
👉 It can actually be trees splitting.
When extreme cold hits fast, the moisture and sap inside a tree can freeze and expand. That rapid expansion can cause the trunk or large limbs to crack suddenly, sometimes loud enough to sound like a gunshot.
📍 Most likely during: • Rapid temperature drops
• Subzero air settling in
• Calm, bitterly cold nights
🌲 Important to know: • This is uncommon, but very possible in extreme cold
• Healthy and weakened trees can both be affected
• Large cracks or falling limbs can be dangerous
🚗 Safety tips: • Avoid parking under big trees during deep cold
• Be alert when walking outdoors
• If you hear loud cracking sounds, it may not be what you think
