Tips for Postpartum: Top 4 Focus Areas

Postpartum isn’t just about caring for a newborn—it’s about caring for the person who gave birth. Here are four focus areas every family should prepare for, including the unknown but very common truths no one always names.

1. Body Recovery
The unknown truth: healing is not linear. Some days you’ll feel okay, and the next your body may demand deep rest. Bleeding can last weeks, swelling comes and goes, and exhaustion can feel heavier than expected. Recovery is not a race—your body is doing sacred repair work.

2. Emotional & Mental Health
The unknown truth: joy and overwhelm can exist at the same time. Mood shifts, anxiety, tearfulness, and intrusive thoughts are common—especially in the early weeks. You don’t need to “push through” or minimize how you feel. Support and early check-ins matter more than perfection.

3. Feeding Baby
The unknown truth: feeding is learned, not instinctual. Whether breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, or a combination. Challenges are normal. Latching, supply concerns, and decision fatigue can show up fast. Feeding your baby should not cost your mental or physical well-being.

4. Support & Boundaries
The unknown truth: you may need protection more than visitors. Well-meaning people can unintentionally overwhelm a healing parent. Setting boundaries around visits, advice, and expectations is an act of care—not selfishness. Support should feel grounding, not draining.

Postpartum care is not a luxury—it’s essential.

Starting February 2026!

Wild Olive Birth Co will be collaborating with EveryStep to offer direct lactation and infant feeding referrals to families in Polk County.

Additionally, I’m excited to announce my mentorship with Mother Nurture Maternity , Leslie Owens, RN IBCLC through the Lactation Consultant Launchpad™. This program is a comprehensive training program including mentorship, clinical hours and a resource library that can prepare aspiring lactation consultants to meet all the requirements to sit for the IBCLC exam in 12-18 months.

What an exciting time to expand services and continue my pursuit to become a lactation professional.

Spent the day at the Capitol advocating for a $1M appropriation for the Double Up Food Bucks program.

Double Up Food Bucks is a nutrition incentive program that expands access to fresh fruits and vegetables for SNAP users. Currently, the program supports over 25,000 participants across 172 locations in 79 counties.

Why this program matters:

🏥Improves health outcomes by helping prevent and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

🍎Honors choice and dignity by allowing participants to select foods that align with their culture, preferences, and curiosity around nourishment.

💵Strengthens communities by increasing the affordability of fresh produce, supporting local farmers and retailers, and boosting local economic impact.

Alongside my work as a doula, food access is another critical way I support families across Iowa through my role managing this program. Investing in food access is how we move policy into practice and make care tangible.

🎶 “Man I Need” — Olivia Dean

This song is a soft but firm boundary.
It’s about confidently demanding quality love — not chasing it, not guessing it, not settling for almost.

It’s saying: step up.
Communicate clearly.
Show me consistency.
I’m not here to read between the lines.

That energy is self-worth in motion — refusing mediocrity and choosing clarity every time.

At Zen Saturday, we’re bringing this message into the body through power poses. Not to intimidate, but to remind ourselves what it feels like to stand rooted in our standards. Chest open. Feet grounded. Breath steady.

When your body knows its worth, your boundaries speak for themselves.

Come practice taking up space.
Come practice asking for what you need — without shrinking.
Come practice choosing yourself first.

🌱Zen Saturday — where self-worth becomes embodied.
