The Project of Primary Health Care

The Project of Primary Health Care Nurse & Case Management for folks living with HIV & free HIV & STI Testing for all community members! The change took place, as planned, on January 1, 2013.

The AIDS Project of Central Iowa formally joined forces with Primary Health Care, Inc. (PHC), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and federally qualified community health center. The Project and PHC have been partnering for 20+ years to offer a broad array of services for Iowans at risk for and living with HIV. Now a full continuum of services from testing to treatment is available through one organization. Staff at both
agencies have been working together to not only maintain, but expand, access to care, support, and prevention services.

Did you know there is an option to help reduce the risk of certain STIs after exposure?

DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a prevention strategy that can lower the chances of getting some bacterial STIs, including chlamydia and syphilis, when taken after s*x.

DoxyPEP can be a helpful tool for people who may be at higher risk for STIs, but it is not a replacement for regular testing or other prevention methods.

If you are interested in learning more about DoxyPEP and whether it may be right for you, talk with one of our providers.

PrEP questions? Let’s make it simple.

✔️ PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV
✔️ It does not protect against other STIs
✔️ Protection, regular testing, and provider check-ins still matter
If you think PrEP might be right for you, we’re here to help you talk through your options — judgment-free.

Mental health support should be accessible, compassionate, and judgment-free.

Through Primary Health Care, The Project connects people to Behavioral Health services that support emotional well-being at every stage of life. Services include therapy, medication management, and coordinated care for children, teens, and adults - offered in person or via telehealth.

Most insurance plans and Medicaid are accepted, with sliding-fee options available.

Dangerously cold weather is expected across central Iowa this weekend.

The National Weather Service warns of subzero wind chills, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Conditions may last through the weekend.

To help keep people safe, we'll continue providing free rides to approved daytime warming centers and overnight shelter services while Polk County’s Extreme Temperature Plan is active, which is expected through at least Monday.

Please check on neighbors and share this information with anyone who may need it.
