Detroit, get ready 🚀🎤

The Hip Hop M.D., Maynard Okereke, is coming to the Garden Theater on March 10th at 6PM — and this is one you don’t want to miss.

Maynard is a former civil engineer turned science communicator who blends hip hop, pop culture, and STEM to make science accessible and exciting—especially for underrepresented youth. Through his platform Hip Hop Science, he’s on a mission to close education gaps and make learning feel relevant, creative, and empowering.

With a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington and six years in the field before pivoting into entertainment, he brings real-world experience to the stage. You may have seen him on Netflix’s Ada Twist, Scientist, The Science Channel, or featured in Scientific American. He’s also been recognized with the Odyssey Award for Excellence in Social Media and named NSBE Entrepreneur of the Year.

This event is about innovation, culture, curiosity, and showing young people that science belongs to them too. If you care about education, creativity, or the future of STEM in our communities, be in the room.
March 10th. 6PM. Garden Theater.
Let’s show up, Detroit. 🔬✨

Happy New Release Tuesday, Source readers 📚✨

We’re still celebrating our Books of the Month wall for Black History Month, and if you haven’t taken a good look yet, this is your sign. There’s a huge selection up there right now—titles that dig into history, culture, resistance, education, and the long arc of Black thought. We highlighted two of them in our last video, so make sure to check that out for a closer look.

As for this week’s new releases, we’ve got a strong nonfiction lineup. The Quiet Coup is now available in paperback, and we also have The Racial Wealth Gap by the same author—both offering sharp analysis on power, policy, and economic inequality.

Of course, we’ve stocked our regular selection of children’s books for the week, but overall this drop leans heavily into nonfiction—books meant to help you dive deeper, ask better questions, and expand your understanding.

More details coming in the video, but in the meantime, come through and explore. We’ve got plenty waiting for you 🤎

Looking ahead, don’t forget that March 1st we’ll be at the Main Library branch to celebrate Keeper of Lost Children by Sadeqa Johnson.

We’re really excited to be part of that moment, so mark your calendars now.
As for today’s new releases, we’ve got a strong mix on the shelves: a handful of children’s books including Remember Her Name and Here Come Aunties, powerful music memoirs from Teddy Riley and Chuck D of Public Enemy, and thought-provoking reads on Native Americans and the making of race in the United States. We also have poetry, including 44 Poems on Being with Each Other, plus a few other gems worth spending time with.

Happy New Release Tuesday, Source readers 📚✨

This week’s new releases invite you to think deeper about freedom, justice, imagination, and what it truly means to tell our stories—past, present, and future.

We’re excited to share The Lion’s Run by Sara Pennypacker (author of PAX), a powerful story about an orphaned boy named Lucas who discovers his courage by getting involved with the French Resistance during WWll

We’re also celebrating Derrick Barnes and Christian Gregory on Seven Million Steps, a moving reminder of perseverance and collective journey.

History takes center stage with Freedom Lost, Freedom Won by Eugene Robinson, a personal look at America’s unfinished promises, and I’ll Make Me a World by Jarvis R. Givens, which traces the 100-year evolution of Black History Month—right on time for February.

For readers curious about systems and solutions, we have The Racial Wealth Gap by Melissa Baradaran, breaking down how inequality was built, and Restorative Justice Up Close, edited by Sally Swarthout Wolf, offering firsthand perspectives on justice that actually works.

And for those who love bold storytelling, Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor challenges who gets to shape narratives in a future driven by power and imagination.

Come spend some time with us this week and explore books that ask big questions and spark real conversations. As you know, we’re a nonfiction-forward bookstore—if this speaks to you, our shelves are ready 🤎
