Building Safety Month: Save Energy – Build to Code
FEMA encourages partners to join in supporting National Building Safety Month in May, a public outreach and education campaign coordinated by the International Code Council (ICC) and their thousands of members worldwide. Building Safety Month aims to increase awareness of the need for overall safety and sustainability of buildings through the adoption of model building codes and promotion of code enforcement. The campaign includes an array of community events, safety demonstrations, and educational outreach activities which are designed to promote awareness of the need for safe and sustainable structures where people live, work, and play.

This year's theme is “Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes." Each week in May will have an individual theme. The theme for May 25-31 is "Save Energy – Build To Code." Just by choosing energyefficient building materials and supplies, homeowners can make positive changes to both inside and outside environments, creating homes that are better for you and our world.

FEMA urges partners to Build Green. Building green does not necessarily mean starting from scratch or spending more money. Building green means living better, smarter, and healthier. Learn more about how you can build safer, more resilient buildings by downloading “FEMA’s Natural Hazards and Sustainability for Residential Buildings," which outlines how to retain or improve natural hazard resistance while incorporating these green building practices.

Find out how organizations can participate in Building Safety Month by visiting ICC’s Building Safety Month page for more information.

May is Disaster Planning Month (ICC & FEMA)

Information on Tornados and High Winds

A properly built, high wind safe room protects your family from the most intense tornadoes and hurricanes and can be incorporated into a planned build or renovation to create a multiuse space in your home, adding to its value. FLASH urges homeowners to "Give an Ordinary Room an Extraordinary Purpose" by building or retrofitting interior spaces in their home to safe-room standards.
•Tornado safe rooms are designed to withstand winds up to 250 miles per hour, and offer lifesaving refuge for families in the path of high-wind events like tornadoes.
•A safe room designed to meet standards set forth by the National Storm Shelter Association, the International Code Council and FEMA and will stand up to the most intense tornadoes and hurricanes.
•Safe rooms can be located anywhere on the first floor of your home, in a basement or outside. A safe room can double as a closet, bathroom, laundry or even an outdoor room like a garden shed or pool house.

Prepare Your Family

Making sure your family is prepared for any natural disaster is important. Below are some of the steps you can take to prepare your family and protect your home from natural disasters. Your actions can ensure that no matter what Mother Nature brings, you, your family and your community will be resilient.

Here are a few tips to follow from the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes – (FLASH®) when preparing your family for any emergency.
•Develop a family disaster plan that includes a list of food and water supplies needed for each member of your family and supplies for your pets. Make copies of important documents like insurance policies, the deed to your home, and other personal papers, important phone numbers and a home inventory. Create a checklist of important things to do before, during and after a disaster.
•Review your evacuation route and emergency shelter locations with your family. Options for evacuation would include staying with friends and relatives, seeking commercial lodging, or staying in a mass care facility operated by disaster relief groups in conjunction with local authorities.
•Taking shelter is critical in times of disaster. Sheltering in place is appropriate when conditions require that you seek protection in your home, place of employment, or other location where you are when disaster strikes.

2013: Highest Rate of Employee Theft in 6 Years
Security Magazine (02/15)

According to the 2013 Marquet Report on Embezzlement released in December 2014, Vermont topped the list of highest embezzlement risk states in the country for the third time in the last six years. It was followed by the nation's capital, West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota, Virginia, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri. The research shows that the number of U.S. embezzlement cases rose 5 percent over the previous year. In total, 554 major cases -- those with more than $100,000 in reported losses -- were active in the United States in 2013. Only around 5 percent of major embezzlers were found to have a prior criminal history. The Marquet report went on to draw several conclusions, ranging from the reality that embezzlers are most likely to hold financial positions with enterprises to the most common embezzlement scheme being the forgery or unauthorized issuance of company checks. The study further determined that perpetrators typically begin embezzlement schemes in their early 40s. Finally, while females are more likely to embezzle on a large scale, males embezzle significantly more money on average.

A growing number companies are using fake phishing emails to test their employees' security savvy and to provide a teachable moment for those that have not yet learned how to respond to a suspicious email. Eighteen percent of users will visit a malicious link in a phishing email, according to Verizon's 2014 data breach report, and roughly one in four data breaches are caused by employees, according to a 2014 report from the Online Trust Alliance. Several companies such as Wombat Security and PhishMe actually offer fake phishing emails to enterprises as a service. PhishMe CEO and co-founder Rohyt Belani says that a mentality has built up in the security industry that users are "stupid" and the "weakest link," but he says the fault lies at the feet of the security industry, which he believes needs to do more to educate users and fake phishing emails provide a means of doing that. Randy Withrow, chief information officer at Pinnacle Financial Partners, says his company has seen significant improvement among its workers since it adopted Wombat's fake phishing email program. Successful phishing attempts have dropped by 25 percent at the company. Withrow says that workers will take it to heart when they fall for the fake phishing emails.

FYI: How Can Someone Steal Your Credit Card While It's Still in Your Wallet?
Credit card fraud generally comes in two forms: in-store fraud and card-not-present fraud. In the first situation, a thief has your credit card in her hand and uses it at a payment terminal just as you would. In the other scenario, a thief may or may not have a physical card, because all he needs to make an online or over-the-phone transaction is your card number, expiration date and security code (sometimes, he might need your name and billing ZIP code, too). People who steal electronic credit card data or buy stolen data off the black market can manufacture fake cards and get away with in-store fraud. If your card is in your wallet and you receive a notification from your credit card company saying your card has been fraudulently used in a store, restaurant or other bricks-and-mortar location, that's probably what happened.
