Slow Roll

Slow Roll Slow Roll is a weekly bike ride dedicated to promoting cycling in the City of Detroit.

Slow Roll is far more than just a bike ride, in its 7th year, this unique 501c3 nonprofit brings together thousands of people from all over the region during 25 weekly bike rides a year to discover more about our city and each other. Slow Roll is continually contributing to the growth of bicycle culture in the City with a goal to further bicycling not only as a health initiative, but also to help improve Detroit’s image in order to repopulate it.

Big Mike was the heart and soul of what Slow Roll represents. We lost a legend this year and Detroit wont be the same without him. Truly an OG of the city and one of the main characters that made Slow Roll so successful, fun, and safe to ride. If you knew him, you knew him well and he would be there for you on this ride and in life.

Come celebrate his life with us on Tuesday 10/7 @ 8pm at SPKR BOX - 200 Grand River in Downtown Detroit.

If you remember Slow Roll from back in the day then you remember Big Mike - an OG of so many things including Slow Roll and our Squad. He's a giver, and gave hundreds of hours to make things happen, keep us safe, keep us rolling, and keep us in line.

Big Mike and his family could use some help, so we're dusting off this page to share the sad news and invite you to pitch in.

Kelsey Hubbell, who worked for Slow Roll and knows Mike well is organizing a GoFundMe and also a fundraising Phat Kid Ride for Mike. Please pitch in as you are able and keep Mike in your hearts, your prayers, and in the joy you feel when you ride in Detroit.

If you’ve ever ridden a bike or gone to a music venue in Detroit, chances are you recognize Mike … Kelsey Hubbell needs your support for Big Love for Big Mike

Congrats to Detroit Bikes, owner Zak Pashak, and their Master Builder, our own Henry Ford II, on their project to build the Schwinn Collegiate right here in Detroit. It's been a long time since a Schwinn was made in America.

The original Collegiate was sold via Schwinn’s authorized dealers, a network of independent bike shops formed in 1952 that dominated the sale of bicycles in America for the following 30 years, including into the “bike boom” of the early 1970s.

A sad but beautiful reminder of how we connect on bikes. We’ve lost riders, who we remember and cherish. We’ve not lost the spirit that joins us.

“I was fine until his wife told me something that forced me to hold back tears. This man loved to do Slow Roll—the popular weekly bike ride that takes thousands of people through the city by bikes. Suddenly, Darrin Cato was no longer a stranger to me; he was one of my people.”

The motor city is battling one of the highest coronavirus death rates in the U.S. as it rallies to support those in need.

Slow Rollers,

Like you, we have been watching the news about COVID-19, anticipating its arrival here, and wondering how it will affect all of our lives. We hope all of you are safe and taking every precaution.

Slow Roll Detroit’s 2020 Season is delayed. A bike ride drawing thousands of people can not happen at this time. We don’t know when we will be able to kick things off and we don’t intend to guess. We do fully intend to have a meaningful season, but we will only do so when it is safe and in formats that make sense. We will continue to adhere to what City and Public Health Officials recommend and will announce the 2020 schedule when we know we can.

Slow Roll can still happen. Right now, with you. Slow Roll started as a ride among a small group of friends who found joy in getting on their bikes and exploring their city. You can still ride your bike, and we hope you will. We all need to find connection in this time of isolation. Fresh air and a little exercise will do us all some good. We don’t recommend riding in groups, but get out there alone or with a couple of your fellow isolators - the people living in your household. When you ride, maintain social distancing and give anyone you see on the road space, even leaving space between yourselves.

Wash your hands and sanitize before and after your ride, immediately take a shower and wash your clothes upon returning home. Leave your bike outside or in the garage, but but if you must bring it in your house make sure to disinfect it before you do.

Wear your helmets and follow the rules of the road. This is no time for accidents – the hospitals are busy enough.

Share the photos and videos of your personal Slow Rolls - post them to our Facebook group & tag us on Instagram using . If you bike to curbside pick-up, tag the restaurants!

We are developing alternative ways Slow Rollers can support each other and continue to promote cycling in our city. We will share those with you all soon. Until then, stay safe.

We are beyond excited to bring back a classic. The almost forgotten history of Slow Roll is that it began as Slow Roll to Slow Jams, another Monday night event featuring all vinyl funk/soul/disco. We would ride out and come back to this classic night for good music and good people. As we finish off our 9th season we can celebrate their 11 year anniversary with a ride, costume contest and great music! This years winner will receive a Sparrow courtesy of and they can even pick size/color! Lets finish the season strong, cant wait to see the costumes!
