FLU SHOTS ARE IN!!!

Stop by University Pharmacy today to get your flu shots as well as other immunizations such as Hepatitis A!

Commonly asked questions:

Q: Isn’t it too soon to get the flu shot?
A: No! It is recommended by the CDC that you get your flu shot as soon as it comes out. The vaccine takes two weeks to kick into full coverage, and there have already been outbreaks in Michigan!

Q: Do I need an appointment?
A: You can certainly make an appointment, but we also take walk-ins and there is usually no wait!

Q: Can I get multiple shots in the same day?
A: Yes! It is safe to administer multiple immunizations in the same day.

Q: What are your hours?
A: We are open 9-5 Monday-Thursday and 9-4 on Friday!

Michigan Hepatitis A Outbreak Continues

Michigan public health officials are continuing to see an elevated number of hepatitis A cases and resultant hospitalizations. Patients should be evaluated for inclusion in these high-risk groups, and offered hepatitis A vaccine if not currently infected with hepatitis A:
Persons who use injection or non-injection drugs
Men who have s*x with men
Persons who are currently homeless or in transient living conditions
Persons who have been recently incarcerated
Persons with chronic liver disease
To help prevent the spread of this outbreak, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is encouraging all healthcare providers to:
Screen patients for possible high-risk behaviors related to hepatitis A.
Maintain a high index of suspicion for hepatitis A infection in high-risk individuals with elevated liver function tests and jaundice.
Report all suspect and confirmed cases of hepatitis A infection to local public health within 12 hours of identification.

Flu is making its annual round and seems to be targeting our younger kids.

What else is new this year is Hepatitis A! It is now an epidemic in SE Michigan.

Hard to believe that a little over 6 years ago I promoted a program that was going to be so controversial that Wayne State University said my practice was a liability. The explanation was if I had screened and counseled someone to be preliminary positive using CLIA waiver Uni Gold whole blood and Oraquick oral fluid rapid HIV test. They could commit su***de. They felt that I should stick to traditional count, lick, stick and pour pharmacy and don’t pay any attention to what the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Science was teaching the future Pharm D’s.
October is Know your Pharmacist month! Did you know that my lease is being terminated based on having a poor business model? It’s based on the fact that I didn’t take the advice to have a dollar section as my front store, or sell Hostess products. I opened up University Pharmacy to practice pharmacy the way it was meant to be. My vision was to help my patients understand their treatment plans and how to increase health outcomes and decrease unnecessary health cost.
I do not regret wanting to help people know their status for HIV awareness and will continue to push the pharmacy profession forward and break the stigma that pharmacy is just pushing pills and selling convenience items!
