Abortion. Abortion. Aww, puppy! Abortion…

Has your newsfeed looked something like that recently? There has been so much buzz about abortion lately. This issue is dividing people like never before. You either want to boldly stand up for what you believe or you want to remove yourself from social media and hide in your bed to distance yourself from this crazy world. How is the best way to handle this divisive issue in the most Christian way? Here are a few tips. This isn’t a hard and fast “do this and you’ve bought your ticket to heaven” list, but I hope it does offer some guidance.

Remember that we are pro-life. We are against abortion, but we don’t JUST love the unborn. We value each human life...that means even the pro-choice person that we disagree with. Speak in a manner that acknowledges their dignity and worth.

There are better places to have this discussion than social media. We all know of the internet trolls who like to stir the pot and cause drama behind the screen. The best place for dialogue is in person, when you are able to show empathy, love, compassion, and encounter the individual. If you see a post that fires you up, instead of angrily giving your case, calm yourself and invite the person to coffee where you can have a peaceful and productive conversation.

Educate yourself on the issue of abortion. It is important to be able to give your case for life from a scientific and philosophical standpoint. We would recommend going to a PLM Stump the Pro-Lifer event, reading “The Case for Life” by Scott Klusendorf at LTI - Life Training Institute or doing the Equal Rights Institute course.

Last but not least, pray to the Holy Spirit for the words to speak and for wisdom. Remember that “our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of the present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Eph 6:12. We need some help from Heaven!

I went to bed after ending an awful, dysfunctional relationship with feelings of pride and empowerment. Only to wake up the next morning to a positive pregnancy test is quite possibly one of the most emotional roller coasters I could have imagined for my life journey.

I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, being just four semesters away from a degree and a guaranteed slot as an officer in the United States Army. I was so close to putting my dreams and plans into motion. I went from being a single, independent woman to a single mom, overnight it blew out that light for a short period of time.

However, with the encouragement and “never-back-down” pep talks from my father, constant battles with homework, midnight feedings, multiple part-time jobs, last minute doctor visits, and begging and pleading with professors to extend deadlines, I made it. I did it. I accomplished exactly what I had set out to do, and I became an Army officer with my beautiful little girl there to pin my military bars to my shoulders.

Almost seven years later and I couldn’t imagine my life any other way. I’m now happily married to an incredibly supportive man, with two children and another on the way. I know that every moment of my adult life has been woven into a beautiful tapestry created by God, and it all started with that terrifying word “YES” on a pregnancy test.
