Get Up the Road

In Loving Memory of Beverly Patrick

When the tears start to fall, and your heart feels low,

When you’re slanging snot and crying, letting it all go,

Go on and have your moment, let the pain unfold,

But don’t you stay there long, child—it’s time to get up the road.

She’d say, “Life won’t wait for your sorrow or your fear.

Wipe your face, lift your chin, your strength is still here.

The sun keeps on shining, no matter the load,

So dry them tears, my baby — now get up the road.”

Through laughter and love, her lessons still stay,

In every step forward, she’s guiding the way.

Her spirit’s beside you wherever you go,

Saying, “You’ve cried long enough,

now get up the road.”

Beverly Ann Patrick ObituaryBeverly Ann Patrick was born on October 27, 1949, to the union of Johnnie “BigDad” Brintley and Earlene “BigMama” Barkley Brintley in Detroit, Michigan. To this union, five children were born: Jacqueline (“Jacquie”), Beverly, Adriane, John, and James (“Tuffy”). Her parents, sister Jacquie, and brother John preceded her in death.

Beverly was educated in the Detroit Public School System, where she excelled academically and graduated with honors.

As life unfolded, Beverly met and married the love of her life, James Robert (“Sunny”) Patrick. To their union, three children were born: Earline (“Joy”), James Jr. (“Boobie”), and Anthony (“Fresh,”“Ant-Ant”). In 1976, her beloved husband, James Robert, preceded her in death.

Throughout her life, Beverly cherished her family and friends. She found joy in gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, and sharing laughter with loved ones. Beverly was a

faithful member of Christian Community Baptist Church, where she served actively until her health began to decline. Even when she could no longer attend in person, she faithfully joined virtual services each week, remaining spiritually connected and devoted.

Beverly worked more than 30 years with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment to service. At family gatherings, Beverly’s culinary talents were always front and center—especially her famous greens, a dish everyone loved and looked forward to. She delighted in sharing her recipes, crafting her own clothes, and finding bargains at garage sales. Beverly’s frugal nature and creative spirit were trademarks of her personality.

As her health declined, Beverly often reassured her family, saying, “I’m coming home soon, don’t worry.” On September 23, 2025, Beverly peacefully answered her heavenly call and entered her eternal home.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Earline (“Joy”), sister Adriane (“Away”), and brother James (“Tuffy”); her beloved grandchildren Christopher, Jessie, Jazmine, Charline, Judith (Judy), James III, Jasmine,Anthony Jr., Tamia, Tamya, Everleigh, Brianna, Shantinique, and Sydney; and her great-grandchildren Ja’Liyah, Jayshawn, Dallas, Elias, Harper, and Cayden. She was preceded in death by her great-grandchild, Jameel.

Beverly also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever love and miss her.

As Beverly would always say: “It’s time to put your big girl panties on and go forward; You’ve got what you need.”

1 Corinthians 13:13

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
