Now it’s time for them to head back to the North Pole until next year. We’ll miss their playful spirit, but we can’t wait to welcome them back again soon.

Meet Jake Heckmann, an adventurous skydiver and rock climber whose life changed when sudden back pain revealed a spinal-cord injury that left him paralyzed. His outlook was uncertain, but Jake refused to give up, and neither did his care team.

With the help of his physical therapist, BettyJane Blossfeld, and the team at the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s Novi Center, Jake worked tirelessly to rebuild strength and mobility. Through months of focused therapy and unwavering support, he went from being paralyzed… to walking again.

Meet Shalone, our "Patient of the Month”. Just three days into a new job, Shalone’s life changed forever when a Hi-Lo truck hit him on the manufacturing plant floor. “It happened so fast. I saw my bone sticking out of my skin and thought, ‘Is my leg gone? Will I walk again?’”

Doctors initially planned to amputate, but during surgery, they were able to save his foot. After multiple surgeries, including skin grafting and foot fusion, Shalone was referred to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).

His recovery included strengthening, balance, and pool therapy, as he adapted to walking with pins in his toes. After two years of therapy, Shalone progressed from a wheelchair to walking again. “My therapists know what they’re doing. They’re patient but push me, and with them, I’ve really come a long way,” he says.

Saluting the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, and this police officer who was injured in the line of duty, on their recent Ekso Indego Personal training. The dedication and progress that this patient has made with Ekso's robotic technology for individuals with spinal cord injury (T3 - L5) is TRULY inspiring. We're grateful to the team at RIM for their commitment to helping patients take the next steps toward recovery.
