Oase Sbei is a third-year Warrior M.D. medical student and lead author of “Determining the Impact of Medical Arabic Workshops on Medical Students' Preparedness and Communication Skills With Arabic-Speaking Patients,” a study detailing how a group of passionate medical students at the Wayne State University School of Medicine—working in collaboration with the National Arab American Medical Association chapter on campus—have taken a unique approach to addressing a growing need in health care: linguistic and cultural competence in patient care.

Social media can help patients, but it may also harm their health by spreading misinformation, leading to delays in care or even increasing the likelihood of seeking dangerous and wasteful alternative treatments, said the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Aisha Langford, Ph.D., M.P.H., who is bringing clinician, community health worker and health educator voices to the forefront.

For three decades, Michael Cher, M.D., professor and chair of the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Department of Urology, has been a leading presence both at WSU and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Now, upon completing his 1,000th robotic surgery, Dr. Cher reflected on how his journey with this technology began.

“I trained in the era before robotic surgery,” said Dr. Cher, urologic oncologist, chief of Urology and member of the Genitourinary Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos. “When robotic surgery came around in the 2000s, we were able to transfer our traditional surgery skills to the minimally invasive robotic platform. We soon became comfortable doing many types of robotic-assisted procedures.”

In October, his 1,000th robotic procedure was a nephroureterectomy for urothelial carcinoma of the kidney. The surgery was to remove cancers in the lining of the urinary tract by removing the kidney and ureter.

Our students and faculty traveled to San Antonio, Texas earlier this month to attend and present at Learn Serve Lead 2025, the AAMC Association of American Medical Colleges' annual meeting.

We're thrilled that our students in particular have opportunities to present their projects, studies and more on the national stage!

Participants included Michael Nunu, Henri Li, Haziq Latif-Jangda, who presented posters at the meeting, as well as Meet Patel, who delivered a presentation, along with Dr. Ryan Day.

Don't mind us, beaming with pride because Steven Daveluy, M.D., professor of Dermatology at our Wayne State University School of Medicine, was named Doctor of the Year by HS Connect, the largest patient-led advocacy group for those with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

HS is a chronic, debilitating, inflammatory illness that results in painful recurring boil-like abscesses. HS Connect says the skin disorder can severely impact patients' lives.

Thank you, Dr. Daveluy, for all the work you do for our Dermatology patients!

Kalyyanee Nanaaware used sophisticated connectivity analyses applied to functional MRI data collected while participants, more than half with stable schizophrenia, undertook a learning task.

The research, based in the lab of Professor Vaibhav Diwadkar, Ph.D., may lead to a better understanding of the complexity of disordered brain function in schizophrenia.

Kalyyanee Nanaaware is a medical student in the School of Medicine's Class of 2027. Research led by a Wayne State University School of Medicine student comparing the plasticity of brain...
