HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs about people with HIV. HIV discrimination is the behavior that results from those attitudes or beliefs. HIV discrimination is the act of treating people with HIV differently from those without HIV. See the Figure below. HIV stigma and discrimination can affect people’s health and wellbeing, and discourage people from engaging in HIV testing, prevention, and care. When we support people with HIV, we make it easier for them to lead healthy lives. Talking openly about HIV can help normalize the subject. We can make a difference in stopping HIV stigma by learning more about HIV and sharing that knowledge with others. IPH is located at 9053 Woodward Ave, Detroit, Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Call 313-3099350 ext. 2 for more information on HIV testing, PrEP, PEP, and treatment.
