Frances C. Bruce, 80, of Dexter, NY, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, at Samaritan Medical Center with her family and friends by her side.
She was born on April 16, 1945, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Paul and Marjorie (Dealing )Chereshnoski. Frances attended Mannsville Manor Central School. After graduating, she moved to Rochester, where she earned her cosmetology degree. In her younger years, she worked as a cosmetologist in Adams, employed by several local salons.
On February 18, 1967, Frances married Robert D. Bruce at the Watertown Presbyterian Church. The couple made their home in Limerick, where they raised their family. Frances devoted many years to caring for her daughters. When they were older, she returned to work as a school bus driver for the General Brown School District, where she worked until her retirement.
Frances shared many special years with her companion, Grant Sykes, until his passing in 2019. The couple enjoyed traveling and spending time at the cottage in Point Peninsula. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and family,gardening, camping, and was a lifetime member of the Dexter American Legion Auxiliary.Her laugh was truly part of her personality .She dearly loved her pets, especially her beloved cat Bella, who was truly her heart and soul.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Valerie S. and William Butler of Pillar Point, and Julie E. Bruce of Dexter; her sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Ray Shelmidine of Pillar Point; her nephew and his wife, Chad and Annabelle Shelmidine and their children; and a niece and her husband, Melissa and Ben Radtke and their children.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert D. Bruce; her longtime companion, Grant Sykes; and her sister, Jeanette Groff.
Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, with a funeral service immediately following at 4:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery will take place in the spring.
A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the services on Wednesday at the Dexter American Legion.
