March is a time to pause, recharge, and refocus.
As part of this month’s wellness focus, we’re taking a closer look at digital detox and its impact on well-being.
Heavy smartphone use, including social media and constant messaging, has been associated with lower well-being and even symptoms of depression. So naturally, stepping away from our devices sounds like an easy solution.
But what does the research actually say?
A recent systematic review of 21 studies (over 3,600 participants) found mixed results. While some individuals experienced improvements in well-being, relationships, self-control, and performance, others saw little to no change, or even temporary dips in mood.
The takeaway: digital detox isn’t one-size-fits-all.
The impact often depends on how the break is structured, individual habits, and personal needs. A more mindful, personalized approach, starting small and building consistency, may be the most effective way to reset.
As we move through this month, we’ll be sharing simple ways to unplug with intention and support overall well-being.
Have you tried a digital detox? What worked (or didn’t) for you?
