The month of February highlights the beautiful holiday of Valentineโ€™s Day. This month can be a time of joy for couples, but for others, it can be a time of sadness. Valentine's Day can sometimes bring with it conflicting notions of love. The cultural narratives seem to imply and tell us that love is mostly about feeling good. It asks, โ€œHow can my partner fulfill me?โ€ But true love is deeper than that. True love is sacrificial and willing the good of the other. When one has a disordered idea of what love is, Valentine's Day can cause anger and sadness instead of a renewed sense of love for your partner. What is love to you? Ask yourself:

โ–ช๏ธ Is love only how someone makes you feel?
โ–ช๏ธ Does love mean โ€˜to will the goodโ€™ of the other?
โ–ช๏ธ Is love sacrificial?

Here are 10 quick hacks to get you back on track!

1. When your feelings are big, remind yourself of this: Feelings are like bubbles. They rise, they peak, they pop. They are temporary! This is called Distress Tolerance.

2. Thoughts ARE NOT facts. Let them pass, like a train, without jumping on board.

3. You cannot think your way out of a feeling. You have to breathe and be still to regulate your body first. This is called Emotional Regulation.

4. Speak to yourself like someone you love. Kindness fuels growth: Develop Self-Compassion for yourself.

5. Action before motivation. Move first! Your mood will follow.

6. Exposure-Avoidance teaches danger. Gentle facing teaches safety. Learn to befriend your fear.

7. Accept what you are feeling. It isnโ€™t approval. It is the pause that lets you choose your next move.

8. You are not mean for protecting and speaking what you need. You and you alone are responsible for your capacity.

9. Create a mission statement for yourself. Who do you want to be in 6 months? A year? Live by this. With every decision, choose the action that matches who you want to be.

10. Re-parent yourself. Give yourself now what you needed then!
