🌟International Play Therapy Week🌟

These are the most popular games chosen in the play room. They’re also probably the most common games played during family game nights. If your child has ever been to Bloom, it’s likely they have played these games in session. It’s also likely you’ve questioned the therapeutic process and honestly, probably our professionalism when hearing they’ve played UNO for multiple sessions in a row. Which is 100% valid!

Here’s the why:
🌟your child likely knows these games so they act as instant icebreakers helping them feel comfortable in the therapeutic environment.
🌟during these games there’s less eye contact and less pressure which helps encourage a non-threatening way to talk about emotions, experiences, and concerns.
🌟increased opportunities to role model and practice coping mechanisms in real-time.
🌟we’re able to practice empathy, communication, emotional regulation together.
🌟we observe and learn about your child’s personality and interaction styles. Which helps us lead and direct future sessions.

Another bonus to these games is that they can easily be played in various ways to deepen the therapeutic process and increase self-expression or processing.
☀️a +2 in UNO can turn into, “tell me two things you’re grateful for” or “tell me two things that triggered your anger this week.”
☀️the colored Jenga blocks have a corresponding colored prompt on cards to increase communication.
☀️instead of returning “home” in Sorry! demonstrate one coping skill.

The possibilities of play are endless! 🎉

🌟International Play Therapy Week🌟

No two Play Therapy sessions are the same, just as no two children are the same!

Here at Bloom, we primarily focus on direct and non-direct techniques during a Play Therapy session. What exactly does that mean? 🤔

▫️Non-directive play therapy techniques come from a Child-Centered approach where your child leads the session or activity and we carefully observe the specific play they are creating and follow along with their narrative. This allows them to process a specific issue of their choosing at their own pace.
▫️Directive play therapy techniques typically come from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach where we provide structure to the session by directing an activity, toy or game to address a specific issue. This may include role playing and role modeling a coping skill.

By combining these two approaches (+many others!) we are able to completely individualize treatment plans to ensure your child is receiving the best care possible. ✨

Here at Bloom, we are BIG fans of play.

Ever wondered why? Play is the natural, primary form of communication for children. When the therapy environment feels natural, your child can easily learn about themselves and the world around them. The carefully chosen toys in the play room become your child’s words and the play they create is their language. We observe and strategically utilize the specific play your child is creating to help them express what is troubling them, promote cognitive development or to provide insight and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking.

Play Therapy is used to treat a wide range of mental health challenges such as; anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum, oppositional defiant and conduct disorders, anger management, crisis and trauma, grief and loss, divorce and family dissolution, academic and social developmental. No problem is too big or too small!

Stay tuned over the week to continue learning about Play Therapy and how it’s used at Bloom!

❓❓Do you have a specific question about Play Therapy? Drop it in the comments & we’ll make sure to answer it over the week! ❓❓
