Today, the THSO and Tennessee Highway Patrol, alongside myTDOT, local law enforcement, and traffic safety partners, are cracking down on distracted driving as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Kathy Kilgore Beeler, who works on our teen traffic safety initiatives was on hand at the Nashville Sounds Stadium to represent Drug Free Dickson!

The campaign kicked off with press events in Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga and Nashville (pictured), followed by enforcement operations to identify violators of Tennessee’s Hands-Free Law (T.C.A. § 55-8-199).

Reminder: It is illegal to hold a phone or mobile device while driving. Violators risk points on their driving record and putting lives in danger.

Today was an educational and eye-opening experience for Survive the Celebration at Creek Wood High School.

Local first responders gave the senior class a powerful, real-life look at the devastating consequences of underage drinking and impaired driving through a mock crash re-enactment.

Special guest speaker Carol Werning Akers courageously shared her story of loss after a drug-impaired driver killed her son, Jacob Akers, in 2014. A 2010 CWHS graduate, Jacob had dreams of becoming a doctor dedicated to saving lives. His story is a heartbreaking reminder of what’s at stake.

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office brought the Seat Belt Convincer, showing just how jarring even an 8 mph crash can be on the human body.

Drug Free Dickson also provided a hands-on experience with a pedal kart and impairment goggles, allowing students to see how impaired driving affects coordination, reaction time, and decision-making.

These powerful demonstrations and stories remind us all: one choice can change everything. Let’s continue to encourage safe, sober decisions every day, but especially during this celebration season of Prom and Graduation. 💙

We are incredibly thankful for a community that truly cares about our youth and took the time to bring awareness to the preventable choice of driving impaired. Together, we can make a difference and help keep our students safe.
