2026 Severe Weather Awareness Week - Day 1

Tornado Watch vs. Warning

A Tornado Watch is issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. It does not mean that they will occur. It only means they are possible.

Severe thunderstorms are defined as follows:

1) Winds of 58 mph or higher

AND/OR

2) Hail 1 inch in diameter or larger.

Tornado Warning

A Tornado Warning is issued when a tornado is imminent. When a tornado warning is issued, seek safe shelter immediately.

Shoveling snow and ice, pushing a broken down car, and other physically demanding activities can trigger heart trouble in cold weather. Avoid OVEREXERTION: stay warm, take frequent breaks, pace yourself, and don’t push through chest pain. If you feel dizzy, short of breath, or nauseated, stop and seek help

Virginia State Police is actively monitoring roadway conditions statewide and will move to 12-hour shifts as the storm approaches. Motorists are urged to closely monitor road conditions and follow VDOT guidance before traveling. Give snowplows and VDOT trucks plenty of space to safely do their jobs.

Everyone should stay off the roadways during and after the storm unless travel is absolutely necessary.

If you must drive:
• Use headlights
• Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle, including the roof
• Slow down and drive for conditions
• Do not tailgate
• Buckle up
• Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready
• Carry emergency supplies

Conditions will continue to be monitored and incidents responded to throughout the storm.
