April 2nd marks World Autism Awareness Day, a time set aside to bring greater understanding to autism and the experiences of those on the spectrum. First recognized by the United Nations in 2007, the day has grown into something even more meaningful: an opportunity to move beyond awareness and toward acceptance, appreciation, and inclusion. 🌍💙
Across our communities, autistic individuals contribute insight, creativity, and perspective in ways that enrich the world around us. At the same time, many autistic people face higher rates of mental health challenges than their neurotypical peers, which makes accessible, informed support especially important.
Helpful resources are available for those seeking guidance or mental health care.
The Autism Center of Illinois offers practical tools and information for autistic individuals navigating the mental health system in the Sauk Valley:

Meanwhile, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides education about autism and co-occurring mental health conditions, along with guidance on finding support:

This month and every month, let’s continue building communities rooted in understanding, respect, and inclusion. 🤝✨
