Warts, Corns & Calluses: Home Care vs. Podiatry

Warts, corns, and calluses are common foot issues with different causes:

Warts: Viral, often with black dots; painful under pressure.

Corns: Hard, circular spots from friction; tender on toes.

Calluses: Thickened skin on heels or balls of feet; protective but can crack.

Home Care:

Keep feet clean and moisturized
Soak and gently file thick skin
Use cushioning pads
OTC wart treatments may help

See a Podiatrist If:

Pain limits walking
Bleeding, cracking, or infection
Persistent or recurring warts
Diabetes or circulation issues

At Florida Foot & Ankle, we provide professional treatment, including wart removal, corn and callus care, and custom orthotics—keeping feet healthy and pain-free.

Heel Pain in Children: Causes, Treatment & When to See a Podiatrist

Heel pain is common in active kids but shouldn’t be dismissed as “growing pains.” Sports, rapid growth, and repetitive impact can stress the feet. Most cases are easily treated once the cause is identified.

Common Causes

Sever’s disease: Inflammation of the heel growth plate, often from sports
Children’s plantar fasciitis: Pain after rest or in the morning
Poorly fitting shoes, flat feet or high arches, overuse injuries
Rarely, stress fractures or infection
At-Home Care
Rest from high-impact activities
Ice for 15–20 minutes after activity
Supportive shoes
Gentle calf and Achilles stretches
Heel cups or orthotics

Seek care if pain persists, causes limping, swelling, or affects play.

At Florida Foot & Ankle, most pediatric heel pain is treated with stretching, shoe adjustments, or orthotics—surgery is rarely needed. Early care helps kids get back to play comfortably and confidently.

Ingrown Toenails & Foot Blisters

Ingrown toenails and blisters are common foot problems that can be painful and disrupt daily life—but both are treatable and preventable.

Ingrown Toenails

When the nail grows into the skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, or infection.
Causes: improper trimming, tight shoes, genetics, or injury.

Blisters

Fluid-filled skin pockets from friction and moisture, often caused by new or ill-fitting shoes or heavy activity.

Treatment

Ingrown nails: soaking, proper care, antibiotics, or a quick in-office procedure if needed.

Blisters: keep small ones intact and covered; larger or painful blisters may need professional care.

Prevention

Trim nails straight, wear roomy shoes, keep feet dry, break in new footwear slowly, and check your feet regularly.

Foot pain isn’t normal. If symptoms persist, our team is here to help.

Morton’s Neuroma & Metatarsal Pain

Burning, tingling, or the feeling of a pebble in your shoe may be Morton’s neuroma—irritation of a nerve between the toes, often caused by tight shoes, high-impact activity, or foot imbalances.

Symptoms

Burning or sharp pain in the ball of the foot

Tingling or numbness between toes

“Pebble in the shoe” sensation

Treatment

Most cases improve without surgery using wider shoes, custom orthotics, padding, anti-inflammatory care, or injections. Surgery is considered only if pain persists.

Cold Feet? It Could Be a Sign of Poor Circulation

If your feet stay cold even when you’re warm, your circulation might be the cause. Reduced blood flow can lead to tingling, numbness, or slow-healing wounds—and may signal peripheral artery disease (PAD) or diabetes.

Common Causes:
PAD, diabetes, neuropathy, Raynaud’s disease, smoking, or inactivity.

What to Do:
Don’t ignore constant cold feet. Stay active, quit smoking, manage blood sugar and blood pressure, and see a doctor if symptoms persist.

At Florida Foot & Ankle Associates, Dr. Alan MacGill and his team specialize in diagnosing and treating circulation-related foot issues, helping patients restore comfort and protect long-term foot health.

Bunions & Hammertoes: Relief That Fits You

Foot pain from bunions or hammertoes can make walking or standing tough. At Florida Foot & Ankle, Dr. Alan MacGill and our team offer both non-surgical and surgical solutions to help you move comfortably again.

Non-Surgical Relief
Supportive shoes, custom orthotics, padding, stretches, and anti-inflammatory meds often ease pain and prevent worsening.

When Surgery’s Needed
If pain persists or deformity progresses, surgery can realign joints and restore comfort. Recovery takes time, but walking pain-free again is worth it.

Bottom Line
You don’t have to live with foot pain. Whether through simple changes or surgery, Florida Foot & Ankle can help you stay active and comfortable.

04/29/2025

Children and adolescents often participate in high-impact sports, activities, or play that puts strain on their growing bodies—especially their feet. While occasional aches and pains are normal, persistent heel pain in active kids can be a sign of something more specific: Sever’s disease.

Sever’s disease, medically known as calcaneal apophysitis, is one of the most common causes of heel pain in children, particularly those between the ages of 8 and 14 who are physically active. Though the name might sound alarming, Sever’s disease isn’t a disease in the traditional sense—it’s a temporary growth-related condition that affects the heel’s growth plate.
