Myth:“Talking about su***de causes someone to attempt it.”
Reality:Talking about su***de does NOT plant the idea, nor increases the risk.
From a psychological and clinical standpoint, asking directly about suicidal thoughts is one of the most effective prevention tools we have.

People don’t attempt su***de because someone asked —
they attempt it because no one did.

When someone is struggling, silence feels like isolation.
A safe, calm, non-judgmental conversation gives the brain something essential: connection, which reduces the intensity of suicidal ideation.

💬 What actually helps:
Asking openly: “Are you thinking about hurting yourself?”
Listening without rushing to fix.
Staying present and helping connect to support.
Removing shame from the conversation.
