There are several online brain-training programs developed by scientists to challenge your brain in fun ways. These games can provide meaningful results, says preventive medicine specialist Sandra Darling, DO.

For example, in one study a group of healthy, older adults took part in a brain-training intervention. Participants took part in brain-training workshops for 10 sessions over six weeks. They then had four “booster” sessions about a year later, and four more sessions about two years after that.

Researchers say the participants showed immediate improvements in their memory, reasoning or speed of processing. Five years after the study, the group still showed significantly less difficulty in their daily living, like managing finances, compared to people who did not undergo the intervention.

“Brain training programs are designed specifically to improve mental performance, but in truth, any game or puzzle involving strategic thinking can stimulate and engage the brain,” Dr. Darling says

The last thing you want is a fall....

It’s important to know whether or not you or a loved one might be at risk of falls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 4 older people fall each year. This doubles the chances of falling again. And fewer than half of these people tell their physician.

Here are a few tips for preventing falls:
-Remove small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep rugs from slipping; repair torn carpet.

-Keep items you use most often in cabinets that you can easily reach.

-Use secured, non-slip mats in the bathtub/shower or consider the use of non-skid tape on shower floor.

-Have grab bars put in next to your toilet and in the bathtub or shower.

-Improve the lighting in your home. Lamp shades or frosted bulbs can reduce glare, use night lights in hallways.

-Have handrails and lights on all staircases inside and outside.

-Wear laced-up shoes that give good support and have thin non-slip soles.

-Keep your glasses clean.

-Avoid night clothing that drags on the floor such as a long bathrobe.

-Avoid sitting on low furniture. Chairs with arms make it easier to get up.

-Consider the use of a firm 2–3-inch cushion to add height to a chair to make it easier to stand.

-Consider the use of a tub seat and handheld shower to assist with bathing.

-Keep clutter to a minimum.

-Clean up spills on kitchen and bathroom floors immediately.

-Do not wax floors.

-Mark the top and bottom step in a staircase and high thresholds with brightly colored tape.

-Exercise caution around pets and small children.

-Keep a charged flashlight by your bed for emergencies.

-Stay active – begin regular exercise routine after checking with your doctor.

-If your therapist/doctor advised you to use an assistive device (walker/cane), use it at all times. Do not rely on furniture to hold onto while walking.

-Keep a phone in the kitchen and bathroom in the instance that you do fall. Keep emergency numbers near all phones.

-Do not change positions quickly.

Take an active role in preventing falls to help ensure your own safety. Knowing if you are at risk is the first step.
