Whether you are just shoveling snow from your doorstep or tackling your entire driveway, you could end of with an injury this winter. To help avoid that, we’ve asked Rachel Emery, a physical therapist at Northern Light Rehabilitation, to share some shoveling tips.

• Start with a warm-up. Cold muscles can strain more easily. Consider shoulder rolls, neck rolls, and marching in place.

• Choose the right shovel for you. It should be long enough so when you push it your knees are slightly bent, and your trunk is pitched forward just slightly. Your shovel blade should be light and small as to avoid overloading.

• Keep a wide stance, and wear boots that grip. When you hold the shovel, your hands should be at least 12 inches apart.

• To avoid twisting, step in the direction you want to toss the snow and toss it forward/lift the shovel with your legs. Or push the snow forward.

• Stand up periodically to relieve pressure from your low back.

• Take it slow and break up the work into manageable chunks. If you can't say a full sentence, you are working too hard.

• Stop immediately if you have signs of a heart attack, such as dizziness or chest tightness.

Our team in Northern Light Rehabilitation wishes you safe shoveling this winter season!

🎉This week we celebrate our certified registered nurse anesthetists—highly trained, independent clinicians who safely deliver anesthesia care every day across our hospital. From the OR to OB, endoscopy, and emergency care, CRNAs are essential to patient safety, access, and efficiency. We’re proud of the expertise, adaptability, and leadership our CRNAs bring to our community—today and every day.

Happy CRNA Week to our CRNA team: Robin Willoughby, Lead CRNA, Devon Brooks, CRNA, Joe Van Den Hoven, CRNA, and Jo Bennett, SRNA.

New Year, Clean Air at Home 🏠✨

A fresh start can begin right where you live. Making your home and car smoke-free helps protect kids and loved ones from secondhand smoke and supports healthier lungs in the year ahead.

New year, healthier air for everyone.

While today is normally a day where people would ditch their New Year’s resolutions, we wanted to take time to let you know that it’s okay if you aren’t on track with your resolutions but still want to succeed.

Look at your goals you’ve set. Is there a way to make some slight adjustments to achieve that first step? “We constantly set goals for ourselves that we feel we easily should be able to achieve, but our skills vary day to day which influences our behavior. Looking at this with goal setting can really make a positive impact,” says Angela Haley, LCPC, CCS, clinical manager of inpatient services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.

For example, let’s say you drink three cups of coffee a day, and want to get down to one cup a day. Instead of trying to get down to one cup immediately, maybe try only drinking two cups for a day. Then drop it down to one in a couple of weeks. This small change help makes your goal more achievable.

If you also need a cheat day, take it. Have a day of fun and then get back on track the next day.

Everyone has their reasons why they get vaccines. What’s your why?

• I do it for my aging parents who are vulnerable to getting sick.
• I do it for my kids – with them being surrounded by so many other kids, they’re constantly surrounded by germs. It helps protect me and my kids.
• I do it for my co-workers. Some of them have health challenges and we are all together a lot of the time, so when we all get vaccines, we help protect one another.
• I do it because I feel it’s the right thing for me to do.

Whatever your reasons, there’s still time to get in and get your flu and Covid vaccines. Follow up with your primary care practitioner, or visit https://ow.ly/7RoC50XY9TT to schedule an appointment with Northern Light Pharmacy.

Do you know what a Health Informatics Specialist does? These experts focus on workflow optimization and education, helping our doctors, nurses, and others better use health information technology to provide safe, high quality, efficient care.

According to a co-worker, Evie (pictured right), our Informatics Specialist at Northern Light Mayo and CA Dean Hospitals, “is an amazing resource who is always willing to help. She is a joy to work with and truly understands the uniqueness of our small facility. We are so blessed to have her as part of our team.”

Thanks, Evie, and thank you to all of the Health Informatics Specialists who are working every day to improve care.

New Year, Strong Beginnings 🤍

The start of a new year is a reminder that every family deserves support. Breastfeeding provides important health benefits for babies and parents—and no one should have to figure it out alone. Community and healthcare support can make all the difference.

Here’s to healthy beginnings in the year ahead.

At Northern Light Health, we’re building a better approach to healthcare because we believe people deserve access to care that works for them. As an integrated health delivery system serving Maine, we’re raising the bar with no-nonsense solutions that are leading the way to a healthier future for our state. Our more than 12,000 team members are committed to making healthcare work for you: our patients, communities, and employees. Located in the scenic Maine Highlands Region, Northern Light Mayo Hospital provides advanced medical services to more than 26,000 residents in Piscataquis and adjacent Penobscot and Somerset counties. We’re a 25 bed, non-profit, critical access hospital staffed with great nursing and clinical support and a team of primary care physicians and specialists including hospital-based inpatient physicians that provide coverage 24/7 (hospitalists), Family Practice, Ear, Nose & Throat, Internal Medicine, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Psychiatry and Cardiology. Our Emergency Department handled over 12,000 visits last year and our ambulances & EMS responders bring the face of Mayo out into the community often when least expected but urgently needed.

Our core mission has always been to provide high-quality, compassionate health care to those who live and work in our communities. To further this mission, Mayo has outpatient clinics in the towns of Corinth, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford, and Milo.

Dover-Foxcroft, the county seat of Piscataquis County, has a population of 4,200 and is located 38 miles northwest of Bangor. Mayo Regional opened in 1978 and is governed by representatives of the 13 towns in Hospital Administrative District 4.
