Let’s be real…transitions can be HARD 😅
Whether it’s leaving the playground, turning off the TV, or moving from one activity to the next… a lot of kids struggle. And honestly? It makes sense. Transitions require regulation, flexibility, and understanding what’s coming next, all skills that are still developing.
Here are a few simple ways to make transitions smoother 👇
✨ Give a heads up: Try a countdown: “2 more minutes, then we’re all done!”
⏳ Use visual or verbal timers: Kids do better when they can see or hear time passing
🗣️ Keep your language simple: Instead of lots of directions, try: “All done. Shoes on.”
🤝 Co-regulate first: If your child is already upset, connect before correcting
🎯 Make it playful: “Can you hop like a bunny to the door?” → instant buy-in
🧘 Transition to calm before the next task: Try shifting to a quieter, regulating activity first (books, snuggles, deep breaths) before moving on, this helps their body reset
Transitions won’t always be perfect, and that’s okay. We’re not aiming for zero meltdowns… we’re building skills over time 💛
Save this for later & share with a parent who gets it 👇
