Did You Know How Lymphatic Flow Is Directed?

The lymphatic system follows specific pathways throughout the body, both on the front and back. Proper brushing or VMMLD Skin Sweeping must follow these anatomical routes to support effective lymphatic movement rather than pushing fluid in the wrong direction.

This visual demonstrates the recommended brushing or VMMLD Skin Sweeping routine, emphasizing that technique, direction, and sequence matter. Incorrect sweeping can contribute to congestion, while educated application supports proper drainage toward functioning lymphatic collectors.

At National Lymphatic Centers, education is intentional. Clients are taught evidence-informed techniques only when appropriate and are guided on when at-home practices may support professional Lymph Drainage care.
National Lymphatic Centers remains selective, focusing on draining inflammation through precise, medically informed Lymph Drainage. Established in 1991, this is the National Lymphatic Centers standard.

✨ FAQ Time
→ What should I wear during a Lymph Drainage treatment?

Q: Clients often ask what clothing is appropriate during a lymphatic drainage session.
A: At National Lymphatic Centers, lymph drainage is performed massage therapy style on an elevated electric table. The table is lowered for you to get on comfortably, then raised for treatment. Sheets, blankets, pillows, and a thermal warmer are used for comfort, and the warmer is turned off once you are settled.

Most clients keep socks and underwear on. You may also wear shorts or a cami if preferred. Because The Vogel Method (VMLD) uses a skin-twisting technique, access to the skin is important — but there are several clothing options, and it truly does not need to be complicated.

At National Lymphatic Centers, are expertly trained in The Vogel Method (VMLD) to drain inflammation and reduce swelling safely and effectively.

✨ FAQ Time
→ Why does my arm not drain even while wearing a compression sleeve?

Q: A common question we receive is why swelling persists even with compression.

A: One of the definitions of Lymphedema is that the lymph fluid cannot get out for one reason or another. If an arm is not draining, the issue may not be the sleeve itself. The sleeve may be too tight, or the limb and shoulder region may still be congested and require proper drainage first.

Compression can only work when lymph fluid has a clear pathway. In many cases, the arm needs to be manually drained before a sleeve can be effective. If a sleeve leaves deep red marks near the shoulder, that is often a sign of congestion rather than support.

Always be measured and fitted by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) to ensure compression supports lymph flow rather than restricting it.
