Why You May Feel Sore at the Start of Treatment

When beginning Spinal Decompression Therapy and Chiropractic Care, your body may experience temporary soreness or a brief increase in symptoms. This reaction is normal and often part of the healing phase known as retracing.

What Is Retracing?

Retracing occurs as your body begins correcting long-standing tension, inflammation, and structural imbalances. During this process, old pain patterns may temporarily resurface before improvement begins.

Common Comparisons Patients Understand

It’s similar to how your body reacts in other healthcare situations:

Sore gums after a deep dental cleaning
(Inflamed areas are being cleaned and corrected.)

Sore muscles after your first workout in years
(Muscles are awakening and adapting to healthier function.)

Soreness after a deep tissue massage
(Tight or restricted areas start to release.)

Why This Is Actually a Good Sign

Temporary soreness can indicate that your:

Joints are beginning to move more normally

Muscles are re-activating and rebalancing

Nerves are decompressing

Alignment is improving

Inflamed tissues are healing

These early changes often produce short-term discomfort before long-term relief sets in.

How Long Does It Last?

Most patients experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours. As treatment continues and the spine stabilizes, these reactions typically lessen and results become more noticeable.

What You Can Do to Help

Stay hydrated

Use ice for 10–15 minutes as needed

Follow your recommended treatment plan

Keep your appointments consistently

Avoid heavy lifting in the first week of care

The Goal: Long-Term Relief and a Healthier Spine

Early soreness is temporary—your progress is not. Healing takes place in phases, and feeling “a bit worse before feeling better” can be a normal part of restoring proper function.

Using Insurance vs. Paying Out-of-Pocket for Your Care

At SoCal Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic, we understand that health insurance is important—but it doesn’t always cover the most effective or advanced treatments. Here’s what you should know when deciding how to handle your care and why we do not accept insurance:

1) If You Use Only Health Insurance

Pros:

Lower out-of-pocket costs for covered services like exams or basic adjustments

Predictable co-pays and deductibles

Coverage for medically “necessary” procedures

Cons:

Limited or no coverage for advanced treatments such as spinal decompression, Class IV laser therapy, or shockwave therapy

Fewer visits and restrictions on treatment frequency

Slower approvals and paperwork delays

Care is based on insurance rules, not necessarily what your body needs

Focused on short-term symptom relief, not long-term correction

2) If You Choose to Pay Out-of-Pocket

Pros:

Full access to the best available care and the latest technology

Customized treatment plans for faster recovery

No waiting for insurance authorizations or denials

Greater flexibility in scheduling and frequency

Focused on long-term spinal health and true healing

Cons:

Higher immediate cost

Not applied to your insurance deductible

Bottom Line:
Insurance helps cover the basics, but investing in your health gives you access to treatments that truly address the cause—not just the symptoms.
