California Fire Exploring Association.

This week, we returned from the CFEA Academy. Over the week, our Explorers were trained in Auto Extrication, Vehicle Fires, Live Fires, Firefighter Skills, Wildland Firefighting, as well as evening lectures on the hiring process and ventilation practices.

The three Explorers we brought home were tired, sore, and hungry, but they caught the fire bug, and we look forward to their career development.

Academy Prep.

This week, our Explorers spent some time at our training facility preparing for the annual California Fire Exploring Association academy.

This year, the academy is being hosted by the Hemet Fire Department, with Explorer Posts from all over the western United States in attendance. Approximately 150 Explorers will be mentored and taught by 100 professional firefighters and will spend the week learning the latest state-of-the-art firefighting, vehicle extrication, and wildland firefighting techniques. Evenings are spent in the classroom learning about the hiring and interview process. Many of Downey Fire's past and current members were Post 641 Explorers.

Downey Fire has had the honor of hosting this event four times in the academy's 48-year existence. Will it be a fifth time?

Help us congratulate firefighter/paramedic Brandon Fewell for completing his probationary period. His Captains presented him with his “Firefighter” shield which is known to be a right of passage.

Brandon always has a positive attitude and is resilient, two values that form the foundation of this career! He was surrounded by his family and his crew at FIre Station 1 on the B-Shift where he cooked his “Last meal.”

Downey Fire Department requires their firefighters to complete an 18 month probationary period where they demonstrate proficiency in their skills, take multiple tests, and learn the ins and outs of the fire station life. Congratulations FFPM Fewell!🫡👨🏻‍🚒
