Many young adults get more cavities during college due to a combination of poor oral hygiene habits, a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates, and changes in lifestyle such as stress and late-night snacking. A lack of consistent brushing and flossing, combined with frequent consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks, creates an environment where tooth decay thrives. And admittedly , it’s hard to get dental appointments when you’re away from home.

Parents: If you have a young adult away from home, do your best to help them schedule regular appointments. And if you are that young adult, do your best to not roll your eyes when your mom says you have a 7 AM cleaning appointment on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Young adults may get nervous going to the dentist due to a combination of factors including past negative or traumatic experiences, anxiety about pain or loss of control, and fear of the unknown, including the sounds and smells of the office. Embarrassment about their dental health after a long period without appointments, learned anxiety from family or media, or other co-occurring anxiety disorders can also contribute to dental anxiety. but we are going to make sure that you feel comfortable at our office.
