The mission of The Council is to offer hope and support to reduce the impact of addiction by providing resources and creating opportunities for the entire community which guide the journey of recovery. We do this through three divisions of program services.

🔶 The Prevention, Training, and Education Division provides evidence-based substance use prevention services, community education, and recovery-oriented training for youth, families, professionals, and communities.

🔶 The Intervention Division includes our Criminal Justice, Outpatient, and Case Management Services. Through Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) evaluation and assessment, education programs, and comprehensive outpatient services for both adolescents and adults, we work with you to determine the most appropriate level of care. Our team also provides specialized DUI services designed to help you meet all requirements and obligations when you have been charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

🔶 PRO-ACT: Pennsylvania Recovery Organization - Achieving Community Together, providing recovery support services in Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties.

To wrap up our introduction of The Council’s new board members, meet Donald Mantell, Human Resources Executive.

Hear from Don himself:
“I learned about PRO ACT when working in behavioral health and corrections. I attended the walk while employed at Community Education Centers as the Regional HR Manager, Southeast US. It was at this time that my personal recovery journey met my professional work history. I strive daily to provide a proactive developmental approach to the lives of individuals I come into contact with, both personally and professionally. I obtained my Bachelors Business Administration from Temple University and a Masters of Business Administration from Holy Family University. I am a Human Resources executive in Healthcare.”

Meet Dr. Nick Maio, another new face to The Council’s board!

Dr. Nick Maio, a former Army National Guard medic, embarked on his military journey in 2003 in Petersburg, Virginia, deploying to Iraq in 2005 with a military police unit. While his time spent in Iraq was difficult, the following three years proved to be the toughest, marked by depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, which led to isolation from family and the military. That all changed when he got a call from a New Jersey National Guard unit mobilizing to Iraq. In 2008, he began training for his second tour in Iraq. This was a challenge for Dr. Nick, as he was still battling substance abuse and lost two close friends tragically while training in Texas. Instead of a deployment, he was admitted to the VA hospital in Coatesville, PA, for substance use disorder treatment. Completing the PTSD program and spending months in a homeless domiciliary, he gradually rebuilt his life. It was not easy, but with a lot of persistence and support from both the VA and family, Dr. Nick reclaimed his life, met his wife, and became a chiropractor. Today, he helps people who are suffering daily and credits his suffering with providing him with a wealth of empathy which he uses to connect with and help his patient population.

We are so pleased to announce that at our meeting in December, we welcomed three new members to The Council’s Board of Directors!

Meet Theresa Parrino Cheshire, LCSW and Program & Prevention Specialist with the Bucks County Intermediate Unit!

Hear from Theresa herself:
“The Mission of the Council greatly resonates with me both professionally and personally. I spent the early part of my career in the field of HIV/AIDS in the late 1990’s-2000’s and was deeply committed to prevention and intervention work for co-occurring substance use disorders. During that time, prevention efforts were very grassroots and focused on strengthening communities. I appreciate the commitment The Council has to the community and their work in addiction services for all people who are affected. The impact of trauma is another focus area of my career and I recognize that it negatively contributes to not only substance use disorder, but community health and wellness overall. I would welcome the opportunity to work towards improving health outcomes in Southeastern PA through participation in the Board of Directors.”

A great morning at the Montgomery County, State of the County - hearing about so many important initiatives and programs. Especially loved hearing Commissioner Jamila Winder highlight the power of recovery and recognize CRS Gina Higgins as a Champion of Recovery. Grateful for legislative partners who celebrate, and invest in, the power of peers!
