Alumni Highlight: Carter Henrie 🩺

During his ICU capstone, Carter discovered just how meaningful a nurse’s impact can be, both in critical moments and in everyday interactions with patients.

“From the life-or-death decisions I was trusted to make, to the attitude I brought into each shift, I realized how much of a difference I could make. Something as simple as helping a patient smile became incredibly meaningful.”

With a background in sales and business, Carter was discovering the power nurses have and how the role transformed his perspective from focusing on numbers to truly caring for people.

“Joyce University gave me the opportunity to go straight into a nursing program and challenged me to become my best self. I wasn’t a strong student before Joyce, and now I’m in medical school. It all started here.”

We’re proud to see the impact our alumni continue to make. 💙

Public Health Week is a great time to reflect on where health truly begins and it’s not just in hospitals. It starts in our neighborhoods, our homes, and through the everyday efforts of people committed to caring for others.

Nurses play a central role in that impact.

We’re especially grateful for the nurses and nursing students who continue to show up with compassion, dedication, and a commitment to improving the well-being of those around them.

Nursing burnout isn’t just about long shifts; it’s a growing crisis in healthcare.

New data shows that 74% of nurses have felt emotionally exhausted from work multiple times a week in the past month. Burnout isn’t a personal failure; it’s a system-wide issue that needs to be addressed.

Joyce University is expanding access to nursing education through regional growth, flexible hybrid learning, and nationwide clinical partnerships to help strengthen the nursing workforce amid ongoing shortages.

For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing Dorothea Dix, a reformer whose advocacy transformed mental health care and laid important groundwork for modern nursing and patient advocacy.

Dix was a fierce voice for individuals with mental illness at a time when they were often neglected or mistreated. Through extensive research and firsthand investigations, she exposed inhumane conditions in jails and institutions, pushing for reform and the establishment of humane mental health facilities across the United States.

During the Civil War, Dix served as Superintendent of Army Nurses, setting standards for nursing care and emphasizing discipline, compassion, and patient dignity. Her leadership helped elevate the role of nurses during a critical moment in healthcare history.

Dorothea Dix’s legacy continues to influence mental health advocacy, and these values remain central to nursing today.

For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing Faye Glenn Abdellah, a nursing leader and theorist whose work transformed patient-centered care and modern nursing practice.

A pioneer in nursing research and education, Abdellah developed the 21 Nursing Problems theory, which shifted focus from tasks to the holistic needs of patients. Her work emphasized viewing patients as individuals with physical, emotional, and social needs, an approach that continues to shape how nurses deliver care today.

Beyond theory, Abdellah broke barriers as one of the first women to hold high-ranking leadership roles in the U.S. Public Health Service, advocating for evidence-based practice and advancing the professional status of nursing.

Her legacy lives on through the emphasis on critical thinking, compassion, and patient-centered care that remains foundational in nursing education today.

Alumni Highlight: Mara Welsh, RN 💙🩺

Mara Welsh always knew she wanted to become a nurse. That passion started early and only grew stronger during her time working as a CNA, where she found purpose in caring for others and building meaningful connections.

During her time at Joyce, Mara discovered a path that truly resonated with her: pediatrics.

"While in nursing school, I discovered my love for pediatrics. I was drawn to the resilience, strength, and joy of children, even in the face of illness or injury. Today, I am blessed to work at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City on the Neuro Trauma unit, where I care for some of the bravest patients I’ve ever met. I absolutely love working with kids and find it deeply rewarding to play a role in their healing and recovery."

Mara’s story is a reminder of how passion can evolve into purpose and the difference nurses make in the lives of their patients every day.
