📚 Hospice Education | Quality vs. Quantity of Life: The Hardest Choice 📚

When it comes to chronic or terminal illness, one of the biggest decisions a family can make is between quality and quantity of life. Should treatment focus on extending life, even if it comes with suffering? Or should comfort and wellbeing take priority?

Primary care, palliative care, and hospice care each approach this balance differently. Understanding your options can help you make the best choice for you and your family’s values and needs.

"If you are looking for hospice support for yourself or a loved one, seek no further! Elevation Hospice has been such a blessing to my clients. I have been able to rely on their team to have the sensitive conversations around this special care. Scott and Laura have gone the extra mile for my clients on more than one occasion. When I call for help with a client, they move mountains to get them the support that is needed. All of us at Extended Family Home Care are forever grateful for having them in our corner!"

Thank you, Brittney, for your kind words! 💙

This Black History Month, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Bernice Catherine Harper—a compassionate leader whose work helped advance hospice, palliative care, and social work in the U.S. and beyond.

Dr. Harper was a strong advocate for person-centered, dignified end-of-life care, with a deep commitment to expanding access for underserved and historically marginalized communities. Through her leadership, education and advocacy, she helped shape how hospice care is understood and delivered—centering compassion, cultural respect and patient dignity.

Her influence contributed to the broader movement that strengthened hospice care within the healthcare system and expanded access for patients and families who needed it most.

Dr. Harper’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the ongoing work to ensure equitable, compassionate care at the end of life.

Update on Winter Storm Fern:

Winter Storm Fern is expected to impact several of our operating states. We want to assure our patients, caregivers and team members that we are actively preparing and taking reasonable, proactive steps to support continuity of care during the storm.

The following actions are underway or in progress, as conditions allow:

Patient Visits:
Teams are prioritizing advance patient visits, with particular focus on high-acuity patients, individuals living alone and those who may be more vulnerable to severe weather.

Medications, DME, and Medical Supplies:
We are working to confirm that patients have appropriate medications, oxygen and medical supplies, and are coordinating with pharmacy, DME and medical supply partners in advance to help address potential needs.

Caregiver Readiness:
Caregivers are being guided on what to expect during the storm, including how to contact their care team and access support if needs arise.

Staff Readiness and Coverage:
Leadership teams are reviewing staffing plans, on-call coverage, travel considerations and contingency plans in anticipation of changing conditions or limited access in certain areas.

Our goal is to reduce disruption, support patient safety and maintain continuity of care to the greatest extent possible. Teams are communicating regularly, documenting appropriately and escalating concerns through established channels as conditions evolve.
