Alcohol Use Disorder is one of the leading causes of substance-related deaths. However, in Georgia, alcohol has not always been treated the same as other drugs under certain treatment regulations.
The Georgia Association of Addiction Professionals (GACA) is leading legislative efforts to address this through Senate Bill 277.
Senate Bill 277 would revise the legal definition of “drugs” in Georgia Code to explicitly include alcohol and its derivatives.
Why does that matter?
It allows licensed programs, including PHP and IOP levels of care, to treat Alcohol Use Disorder as a stand-alone diagnosis. This is about expanding access to care, saving lives, and aligning Georgia with national medical standards.
