“Hope Starts Here, With You, in the Valley” Annual Giving Campaign

This campaign ensures world-class cancer treatment stays right here at home, in the valley. Your support allows Penn Highlands Mon Valley to continue offering comprehensive cancer care services, so patients never have to leave their community to receive the best possible treatment.

Together, we are stronger than cancer. Show your support and learn more about our other two campaigns at giving.phhealthcare.org/giving.

For its outstanding services to breast-cancer patients, both the nurse navigators and radiation departments at Penn Highlands Mon Valley were honored by Quilt for the Cure Supported by Neighborhood Ford Store. 🩷

The hospital was selected for a pilot project in which patients in treatment can sign a quilt made by the Martha Washington Quilters Guild of Washington County.
“Usually our quilts are made from squares decorated by the public in support, comfort and remembrance of breast-cancer patients, but we saw the need for the patients to express themselves as part of our Quilt for the Cure outreach. If this pilot project is helpful to patients, our volunteers will incorporate it into the program,” said Dan Wind, a member of Neighborhood Ford Store’s board of directors — Washington Ford and Woltz & Wind Ford.

A second, traditional Quilt for the Cure quilt also was presented to the hospital. It was made from squares decorated by the public by the Fort Henry Piecemakers Quilting Guild of Wheeling, W.Va. In addition, smaller “micro quilts” were donated for compact treatment spaces.

October 11, 2025 was a great day for breast cancer patients and survivors in the Mon Valley Region! During the 22nd Annual Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk, more than $13,500 was raised to provide comfort care items to breast cancer patients at Penn Highlands Mon Valley. The funds were raised from donations, sponsors and raffles. 🩷

Approximately 100 people dressed in pink participated in the fun event, which was held for the first time at Palmer Park Pavilion #1 in Donora, PA. The day included a one-mile walk, a huge selection of raffle baskets, half the take, a bracelet raffle donated by MarBill Diamonds and Jewelry, memorial ribbons, breakfast featuring pink donuts and music.

The program included brief remarks from Josh LaFleur, Regional Market President – Southwest Region for Penn Highlands Healthcare; Natalie Furgiuele, MD, FACS, a board-certified surgeon and the Director of the Penn Highlands Mon Valley Breast Program; Becky Brown, granddaughter of Lois Orange Ducoeur; and Ryan Pasternak, System Fund Development Manager, Major Gifts, Penn Highlands Healthcare.

Thank you to everyone who came out to walk, and remember and honor those fighting breast cancer! A special thank you to our Diamond Sponsor, the Penn Highlands Mon Valley Medical Staff.

The event would not be made possible without the event-day volunteers and the dedication of the committee members. A special thank you to Debbie Burkhardt, committee chair, and the following Penn Highlands Mon Valley employees who served on the committee: Maryann Konsugar, Ryan Gray, Michele Haftman, Nicole Chiplaskey, Lauren Altemara, Jeffrey Kenavey and Chad VorderBrueggen.

Pictured are breast cancer survivors who attended the walk. 🩷
