COVID-19 UPDATE for Galloway Eye Care Professionals and The EyeSite of Dublin
From: Jennifer Mattson, OD
Late in the evening on March 17, 2020, the CDC made the recommendation that all “routine eye care be postponed” until the threat from COVID-19 passes in our community.
What does this mean?
Beginning immediately, all appointments for routine annual exams will be postponed until after April 6, 2020 or such time that the Ohio Department of Health has been satisfied that risk to Central Ohioans has been successfully neutralized. Dr. Mattson has been tuned in to all press conferences and is in touch with other healthcare providers on a daily basis to monitor the situation.
Definition of “routine care”:
If you desire an exam just to update your glasses prescription or contact lenses, that is routine care. Please keep in mind that most glasses prescriptions are good for 2 years. If you need to get new glasses and you have a valid prescription, you may order them from that Rx, an appointment is not needed. Contact lens prescriptions are good for 1 year. If you are a patient of ours and you need a spare pair of lenses to see you through this time, we will likely be able to accommodate you.
Can I still purchase glasses and contact lenses?
Yes - if your prescription is valid. If your prescription is expired, Dr. Mattson will review on a case by case basis. If you prefer to have your glasses shipped to your home, we can do so for $8.
What is NOT routine care?
Loss of vision, eye pain, red eyes, flashes of light, floaters, loss of part or all of your vision in one or both eyes, getting something in your eye, double vision, an eye turn, or referral by another medical professional for an eye exam - these are medical problems that need immediate attention and we will see you.
If you are undergoing vision therapy services or treatment of eye diseases like glaucoma, dry eye, or being monitored for diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration, or in post-operative care for cataract or refractive surgery - these are all medical services we are still providing.
Can’t I just go to the ER if I have an eye problem?
We should be letting the ER handle patients with more serious problems and potential COVID-19 symptoms and exposure. You will be exposed to far fewer people here and your visit will take much less time here than at the ER.
For patients that still have or need urgent care appointments -
We have increased the time between patients so there is very little or no overlap between appointments. We are still limiting entrance to our office to patients and caregivers necessary to the appointment only. For children, only the child with the appointment and one parent is permitted. All visitors and employees are having their temperature screened when they enter the building and are required to sanitize their hands. Patients or visitors with a temperature of over 100.0F will be turned away at the door.
Telemedicine services are available.
If you have a problem with your eyes and are ill, caring for someone who is ill, or has been exposed to someone who is ill, please call the office and we can set up a telemedicine appointment with Dr. Mattson or Dr. Higbea. If we cannot solve your problem on the phone, we will give you a time to come in when there is limited exposure to other patients and staff. We will also likely have you come in through an alternate entrance if needed.
Curbside glasses and CL pick up is available.
If you need to pick up your glasses and/or contact lenses, please call or text 380-203-6313 when you arrive and we will bring your order out to you. We can also do glasses adjustments and most repairs curbside.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE ARE A SMALL BUSINESS. WE ARE NOT OWNED OR SUPPORTED BY THE STATE OF OHIO OR ANY HOSPITAL. WE APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT THROUGH THIS CRISIS SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO CARE FOR OUR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES AFTER THIS THREAT HAS PASSED.
This is a fluid situation and I am evaluating it every day. Please watch for updates on our Facebook and Instagram pages as well as our website.
We believe these precautions are necessary in order for us to remain open to serve our patients. The bottom line for this time period is IF YOU ARE SICK OR IF YOU LIVE WITH SOMEONE WHO IS SICK, OR YOU ARE CARING FOR SOMEONE WHO IS SICK - YOU NEED TO STAY HOME. Even if you feel fine, you could be a vector for carrying the virus to someone with a weakened immune system or who is in a high risk group. We appreciate your loyalty and patience as this situation evolves.
Stay Healthy!
