October 10th is World Mental Health Day! The goal of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and move forward with efforts to support mental health.

This is the day we get loud in our discussions about mental health issues and find creative strategies to manage them.

All of us can join this movement by getting engaged and building connections. We can:

September is Su***de Awareness Month. Su***de continues to be one of the leading causes of death in the United States. We need to starting breaking down stigmas and talking about su***de to help prevent these devastating and unnecessary deaths.

Here are some statistics, signs, strategies, and preventative measures you can use to help those in need:

Su***de Facts:
⭐️ Over 49,000 people died by su***de in 2023- that is 1 death every 11 minutes.
⭐️ Su***de is 4 times more common in men than women.
⭐️ Fi****ms are the most common method used in su***de, and were used in more than 50% of su***des in 2023.

Su***de Signs:
⭐️ Withdrawing from family and friends.
⭐️ Saying goodbye.
⭐️ Giving away prized and/or important items.
⭐️ Increased risk taking behaviors.
⭐️ Extreme mood swings.
⭐️ Making a will.

Su***de Assistance:
⭐️ Stay calm, listen actively, and provide validation.
⭐️ Don’t leave the person alone, remove harmful objects, and never promise confidentiality.
⭐️ Encourage professional help, use the crisis hotline, and/or call 911.

Su***de Prevention:
⭐️ Identify at risk people.
⭐️ Create protective environments.
⭐️ Promote healthy connections.

True North Psychiatry is working hard to highlight the role telehelath can play in expanding access to mental health care for kids of all ages! 💜

On August 20, 2025 Wilderness Health and colleagues presented Helping Kids Navigate Behavioral Health through Telehealth in Northeast Minnesota through the Great Plains Telehealth Resource and Assistance Center (gpTRAC) summer webinar series. Zomi Bloom, a program director at Wilderness Health, Kari Rengo, a telehealth-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner in private practice, and Shawna, Suomi, a program coordinator with a telehealth-based intensive outpatient mental health service (Charlie Health) joined the panel. They discussed innovations in telebehavioral health covering the continuum of care for pediatric populations. They also shared opportunities and lessons learned in serving rural Minnesotan children.
