Each Wednesday, we're sharing a book that one of our therapists recommends. They're not always mental health or therapy related, but a book that we've found impactful.

This week, Erin recommends The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking by Oliver Burkeman.

"For those who are more on the pessimistic side or tired of toxic positivity, this book looks at how striving to be happy is actually making us miserable. Oliver Burkeman takes a journalistic approach to investigating what happiness means and how some have taken counterintuitive paths toward contentment.

Required reading for anyone who feels that the self-help books they've read aren't quite getting it right."

This week, Renee recommends Brain on Fire by Susanna Cahalan.

"This is a biographical account of a young woman who experiences what appears to be severe mental-health symptoms including mania and catatonia resulting in psychiatric hospital intervention. What was mis-diagnosed and treated as a bipolar disorder was actually a rare form of encephalitis, which requires a very different treatment.

As a clinician who has worked in the field of mental health for over 15 years, I have worked with a number of clients who have been mis-diagnosed with mental health disorders that were actually physical diagnoses. This book is always a good reminder for me when providing initial assessment, as well as when new symptoms may appear to look at the whole human, and not just what can be labeled as mental health symptoms."

This week, Bri recommends Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel.

"Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel encourages readers to further explore the topic of s*x as well as their inner desires related to their s*xuality. Esther Perel takes an open, non-judgemental approach to talking about s*x. This book is great for both individuals, couples, and therapists who are looking to gain greater insight into erotic intelligence or wishing to become more comfortable talking about the topic of s*x and the role it plays in humans lives."

Each Wednesday, we're sharing a book that one of our therapists recommends. They're not always mental health or therapy related, but a book that we've found impactful.

This week, Taylor recommends Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.

"It follows two timelines, the before and after of a school shooting. It also explores mother-daughter relationships, mother-son relationships, teenage relationships (both romantic and platonic), and bullying. While it is a fiction book, Picoult does an incredible amount of research to make her novels impactful but accessible."

*Due to some heavy subject matter readers may want to look at content warnings for this book.
