While this article may be overstated, the article draws on real scientific findings. For example, stem cell release is real, a genuine 2017 study (not from 2025 or specifically from a "Taiwanese" China Medical University, but a collaboration including U.S. and South Korean researchers) published in the journal Stem Cells did find that electroacupuncture mobilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into circulation in rats, humans, and horses. The ~300% increase figure comes from this animal study.

The actual research is more nuanced and primarily explores the underlying biological mechanisms in animal models. More research needs to be done but still exciting to see what this ancient medicine can do 💫

Taiwanese researchers discovered acupuncture triggering stem cell release healing damaged organs naturally. Scientists at China Medical University found that electroacupuncture at specific meridian points stimulates bone marrow to release mesenchymal stem cells into circulation, which then migrate to injured organs and promote tissue repair. This mechanism explains acupuncture's therapeutic effects through measurable biological processes rather than placebo.

Traditional Chinese medicine has used acupuncture for thousands of years, but Western medicine dismissed it as placebo due to lack of biological mechanism. Taiwanese researchers using advanced imaging and cellular tracking discovered that needle stimulation at specific points triggers measurable stem cell mobilization—providing the first clear biological explanation for acupuncture's effects.

Electroacupuncture (needles with mild electrical current) at ST36 (Zusanli point) and GV20 (Baihui point) causes a 300% increase in circulating stem cells within 24 hours. These mobilized stem cells express homing signals drawing them to damaged tissues—injured liver, heart, kidneys, or brain—where they differentiate into organ-specific cells and release healing factors. It's like acupuncture triggers the body's internal repair dispatch system.

Stroke patients receiving electroacupuncture within 48 hours of stroke showed 40% better functional recovery than those receiving standard care alone. Liver cirrhosis patients showed reduced fibrosis markers. Heart attack survivors demonstrated improved cardiac function. The mechanism is entirely biological—traced stem cells from bone marrow to damaged organs. Skeptical Western physicians are reconsidering acupuncture given this mechanistic evidence. We're discovering that ancient healing practices work through sophisticated biological mechanisms science is only now capable of detecting.

As much as my heart is soaking up this new season of coastal living, there will always be a part of me deeply rooted back home. 🤍 The community I built, the relationships formed, and the small businesses that poured so much love into their work still mean the world to me.

While I wish I could be there in person to support local businesses during the holiday season, I want to take a moment to shine a light on a few that truly left a lasting impact on me.

(In no particular order)

✨ Lotus Valley Wellness for guiding me through astrology, vision board creation, and life coaching during pivotal moments of growth.

For all things beauty, these were always my go-to’s:

💄 Revive Beauty Bar
💇‍♀️ Ritual Hair Salon

💆‍♀️ Palm Willow Massage and Bodywork

For Acupuncture:

📍 Kayla at BOSA Acupuncture & Wellness
📍 Dr. Stef at Seneca Springs Wellness

Bio

Julian Pierce is a NYS licensed acupuncturist who has been practicing for over a year. Her journey to becoming an acupuncturist began in 2012 when she suffered from the beginning stages of an autoimmune disorder. After being treated with Western medicine, her symptoms did not completely resolve which then lead her to the discovery of holistic healing. While she began her own quest to heal through exercise, nutrition, meditation, reading, and journaling, she explored the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and soon after became a believer. After consistent treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, Julian’s symptoms were eliminated and she realized this was her life’s purpose. She wanted to help others the same way she was helped. This immediately changed the course of her life, and she pursued her goal of becoming an acupuncturist. Julian earned her Master of Science in Acupuncture from the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in April, 2018 and she is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Julian's training includes adjunctive therapies such as moxibustion, tui na, cupping, gua sha, auricular acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and dietary and lifestyle recommendations. She is able to treat a variety of conditions; however, she most commonly treats pain. While attaining her graduate degree, she had the privilege of treating VA patients during her clinicals at the Canandaigua VA in upstate NY. Conditions she treated included PTSD, smoking addiction, and chronic pain. Immediately after graduation, Julian began working for cruise ships, helping people around the world. After 7 months of treating patients in Europe and the Caribbean, she realized her dream was to bring the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine to patients close to home. She is now practicing at Barkstrom Acupuncture PC- a 15 year old, whole foods based, nutrition, and wellness practice in Jamestown, NY. Julian is motivated to educate residents in and around Chautauqua county about the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine and she is excited to assist patients through their personal healing journey.
