Alternative Horizons is a vital resource in our community, dedicated to empowering survivors of intimate partner violence through comprehensive support, advocacy, and healing. Their incredible work includes:
☎️ 24/7/365 Hotline: Trained advocates are available anytime to provide support, resources, and a listening ear, with access to interpreters in the survivor’s preferred language.
🛡Safety Planning: Helping survivors create personalized plans to keep themselves, their children, and their pets safer in dangerous situations.
⚖️ Civil Legal Advocacy: Assisting with protection orders, divorce, custody, and other legal matters stemming from IPV.
🧠 Counseling Services: Providing trauma-informed individual counseling and support groups.
📢 Community Education: Training community partners on IPV dynamics and trauma-informed advocacy.

When you update your look, you support your community. For the entire first quarter, 2% of all glasses sales at Peak Eyecare will be donated directly to Alternative Horizons to assist them in their mission of support and empowerment. 🕶✨

Is Your Makeup Bag a Bacteria Trap? 🦠👁️

Let’s talk about the one thing most of us are guilty of hoarding: Eye Makeup.

We often see infections that trace back to that favorite tube of mascara you’ve had for a year. It’s not just about “clumpy” lashes; it’s about microbiology.

Here is the science-backed schedule for when to toss your products to protect your vision:

🗑️ Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: 3 Months
The Science: These are liquid environments, which are breeding grounds for bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Every time you pump the wand, you push air and bacteria into the dark, moist tube where preservatives eventually break down.

🗑️ Pencil Eyeliner: 12-24 Months
The Science: Because you sharpen these layers away, you effectively remove the bacterial surface before each use. (Pro-tip: Sanitize your sharpener with rubbing alcohol!)

🗑️ Powder Eyeshadow: 2 Years
The Science: Bacteria struggle to thrive in dry environments. However, if you wet your brush to apply it, that shelf life drops drastically.

🚨 The Golden Rule: If you get an eye infection (pink eye, stye, etc.), throw away everything you used around your eyes immediately. Do not try to “save” it.

Your eyes are mucous membranes—a direct fast-track for bacteria to enter your body. Don’t risk your eye health for a $12 tube of mascara!

Dr cap traveled to Nashville this past weekend to stay up to date on the newest developments in the Dry Eye Disease world. Below are his key takeaways from the New Technologies and Treatments in Eye Care Conference:
1. Be aggressive in treatment in the early stages of Dry Eye Disease, as patients have much better short term and long term outcomes vs waiting until symptoms progress
2. New technique on placing amniotic membranes on the eye to promote better healing

Continuing education last night at hosted by Southwest Eye Consultants! Dr. Gebhard spoke on unique lid lesions, and Dr. Haug discussed retina cases. Our docs at Peak Eyecare are very thankful to have colleagues in town that want to promote education and collaboration between the entire eye doctor community in the Four Corners region. Thanks Southwest Eye and Eolus!

This year we celebrated four years of serving the Durango community we love so much, and we couldn’t do it without YOU. 💙

Through our PeakWeCare program this year, we were proud to support the Women’s Resource Center, The Hive, Riverhouse Children’s Center, and the San Juan Mountain Association — all doing incredible work right here in our backyard.

Thank you to our unstoppable team, this beautiful mountain town, and our wonderful patients for continuing to share your stories, laughter, and trust with us.

BBBS helps local youth dream bigger, shine brighter, and see what’s possible — and we’re honored to support the difference they’re making right here in Durango. 🌟
