With our lighter snow year in Durango, ski runs can get icy fast. Hard-packed conditions increase the risk of falls, and one common injury this time of year is skier’s thumb.

Skier’s thumb happens when a fall causes the ski pole to pull the thumb backward, injuring the ligament at the base of the thumb. Pain, swelling, or a weak grip are signs it may need attention.

If thumb pain is lingering after a day on the mountain, an orthopedic specialist can help evaluate the injury and discuss next steps.
