No one is immune to burnout. It can sneak up on anyone who’s pushed past their limits for too long. However, burnout can be difficult to spot and sometimes even harder to differentiate from depression or anxiety symptoms.

As it can share similar symptoms to other conditions, burnout often centers around prolonged or excessive stress related to external factors (e.g. work, school, chronic illness, or caregiving responsibilities) and improves once the underlying stressors have been addressed. This is different from other mental health disorders that are broader in nature and may require ongoing management.

To help build awareness around what burnout can look like, here are seven signs of burnout to watch out for in yourself and others.

When daily responsibilities pile up, it’s easy to feel weighed down by the repetition and pressure. A “have to” mindset can turn a to-do list into a source of dread rather than purpose. Reframing your perspective to “I get to” rather than “I have to” can help change the emotional tone of your day and introduce a sense of gratitude.

When resistance shows up, pause and ask if this is an opportunity to shift your lens. Practicing this small change regularly can help foster a greater sense of curiosity, choice, and meaning in your daily routines.

Here’s a list of my favorite everyday packing items you can fit in your car, purse, or bookbag in the case you need some help self-regulating while you’re on the go!

- Sensory items can help reduce anxiety and improve focus by providing a tactile outlet for nervous energy or promoting self-regulation ex: fidget toy, stress ball, pop-it toy, or other sensory kits
- Sour candy can sometimes distract the brain from anxious thoughts or act as an intervention before a panic attack ex: Warheads or Sour Patch Kids
- Journaling can be an effective tool for managing anxiety by allowing for emotional processing and self-reflection. Modification: If you don’t want to haul a literal journal around, use your Notes app in your phone
- Listening to a chill, slow tempo music playlist has been associated with reductions in respiration rate, heart rate, sweat production, body temperature, and muscle tension, the same physiological changes associated with reducing somatic anxiety
- The cool airflow from a portable fan stimulates nerve receptors on the face which can send signals to the brain to slow down breathing and promote relaxation
- Talking to someone for support can have a direct impact on overall mood, behavior, and emotional regulation
- A cold drink may help reduce anxiety symptoms by triggering the release of endorphins, boosting mood, and potentially calming the nervous system
- Calming scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or chamomile can effectively reduce anxiety and promote relaxation through aromatherapy. You can carry these scents with you by bringing lotion, essential oils, or an on-the-go tea

Stop “should-ing” on yourself! 📣

Yes, you read that right. One of my favorite therapy phrases is “stop shoulding on yourself.” It’s a playful reminder that we often impose unrealistic expectations on ourselves with the word “should.” This can create unnecessary pressure, leading to feelings of guilt or inadequacy when those expectations go unmet.

If any of your “should” thoughts start to become a source of distress then this is a clear red flag to name it and reframe it!

Allow yourself the space to learn and grow without the weight of unrealistic rules or expectations 💜
