Happy Friday everyone! We're kicking off our weekend with a staff spotlight on Brooke Dalsimer, a ⭐ rockstar ⭐ Speech-Language Pathologist on our school team! Joining the Emerge crew in 2023, Brooke generously shares her infectious enthusiasm and genuine positivity with the kids she treats in the school setting, as well as with her fellow team members!

Thanks for all you do, Brooke! ✨

More about Brooke ➡ Growing up in the Green Mountain state of Vermont, Brooke knew from an early age that her professional path would lead to working with children! Brooke earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders from UNC-Greensboro and has been a licensed speech-language pathologist since 2010. Brooke focuses on working with children and their care team to develop strong rapport and trust, doing so by staying true to her personal philosophy: meeting kids where they are to foster confidence and joy in therapy sessions!

Thank you so much to for having us at last week’s Health Science Career Fair! Laura and Amy were fantastic representatives for Emerge, chatting with local high school students about what a career as an OT, SLP or PT might look like.

Connecting with our community is so important to us at Emerge, and it’s always so exciting to have opportunities like these to showcase how passionate we are about our work!

It’s time for more treats from the Emerge Foodie Files! This time we’re exploring ideas for introducing new foods, and we’ve got 4 Easy Steps for Success 🙌🏼

Playing with foods allows children to engage in multisensory exploration. This can look like:
💄Using foods as makeup: putting green bean nail polish on, or lipstick, blush, etc.
🧛🏻‍♀️ Creating a whistle, or tusks, or vampire fangs with foods
🍽️ Rolling round foods around the plate
💥 Smashing, squishing, or destroying foods to see how they crumble
🥕 Crunch competitions- which food do you think is the crunchiest?
✨ Try creating dust with foods to sprinkle and notice texture, color and smell

It’s important to model supportive strategies with new foods so that our kids know they are safe. It is also important to remember thay if we model using a sense our child is not ready for, they will likely turn away or show other signs of dysregulation.

Have your child involved in meal prep. This can be chopping, mixing peeling, washing and blending, with a parent present. This helps make foods more fun and familiar!

Become a food scientist by having your child involved in creating a food hypothesis, and then test out the product! Here are some scientific suggestions:
🥑 Use an alternative item to create foods such as avocado chocolate brownies, or apple sauce to replace eggs.
🍌 You can also try vegetable or fruit breads, such as zucchini muffins, or banana bread.
🍓 Using a blender of food processor you can make flavored cream cheese or hummus to notice how the color, taste and texture change.

We would love to hear how trying out these strategies has worked for your family!

This month really flew by, don't think? 🧙‍♀️🧹

Before we say goodbye to October, we want to shout out our Physical Therapy team because ICYMI - October is National Physical Therapy Month! I scream, you scream, we all scream for.... Halloween! 🎃👻

We have had so much fun already this week dressing up and enjoying the silliness that spooky season brings, and it's not even Halloween yet! Before the fun starts tomorrow, we wanted to share a few sensory-friendly tips to keep things un-scary for everyone:

👻 Try on costumes today to check for scratchy fabrics or tags.
🎭 If a mask doesn't work for you, face paint or a fun hat can be a great alternative!
🍭 Go trick-or-treating early before the crowds and noise build up.
🧡 Bring your favorite comfort tools like headphones or fidgets to help regulate.
✨ And remember that you can always celebrate your own way! A candy hunt at home or a silly movie night still count as Halloween magic!

Recipes and crafts aren’t just fun during OT - they’re a great way to practice executive functioning skills like initiating, organizing materials, and self-monitoring! 🫧

Avery and her friend made bath bombs this week, which will even add a calming regulation element once they’re used!

Did you know October is AAC Awareness Month? 🧡

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and chances are you're an AAC user! ➡ AAC includes all methods and tools that can be used to help people communicate without speaking, either to support their speech or in place of spoken language. This includes body language, facial expressions - even texting!

Also included in AAC are Speech Generating Devices (SGD) which are electronic devices that aid in communication using vocabulary, layout and design that has been customized for the individual using it.

Swipe through to learn more about AAC, including how you can become a better communicator this October!

Just your typical day at Emerge: Lots of regulation, all kinds of creativity, motor skill work, and the occasional haunting in the sensory gym. Is it just us, or are these two buddies in particularly good spirits? ✨👻

Behind every therapy session is a story. Whether we get to see a child take their first steps, say their first words, try a new food, or just learn a new way to connect with the world.

Medicaid cuts put these stories at risk. These cuts aren’t just budget decisions, they’re life-changing for North Carolina families who rely on therapy and medical support very single week. But together we make a difference.

Please advocate for those effected by signing this petition to protect our Emerge team, and all OT's, SLP's and PT's across the state so we can all continue to provide the incredible care to our clients clients. https://c.org/P9bqw7PbVj

To those insured by Medicaid in NC - We see you. We stand with you. We’ll keep fighting for your children’s care.

Our first SLP Story Time was so special! Megan, a SLP and Reading Specialist in our Cary Clinic, was so engaging and fun as she read two stories with tailor made activities for each one. Thanks for being such a reading rockstar, Megan!

We’re so grateful we could kick off this new experience with Daughters Coffee & Books! What a magical place for coffee and books and community!

We can’t wait for next week at Learning Express!
