First-year resident Andrea Flores Burroughs, MD, PhD, captured her intern year experience in a series of short videos. "... Some of the excerpts detail my excitement as a new resident, admitting my first patient and signing my first orders. Others highlight the joy of birth during labor and delivery and the sadness of death in the MICU."

June is Pride month, a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and allies, and a recognition of the past and ongoing struggles that LGBTQ+ individuals have overcome yet continue to face.

Finding an inclusive healthcare team should not be one of those struggles. At Duke Family Medicine, we take pride in your health in June and throughout the year, with our gender medicine clinic and LGBTQ+ affirming providers and staff. 🌈

We celebrate the le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender & q***r (LGBTQ+) community at Duke Health and across the world this month, just as we celebrate them every day.

In the Duke Health family, we value diversity and have taken many concrete steps to better care for one another. Forbes recognizes us among the “Best Employers for Diversity” & the Human Rights Campaign honors us as a Healthcare Equality Index Leader.

But our work is not yet done. LGBTQ+ patients may be reluctant to seek needed care, choose medical careers or join medical research studies due to past discrimination.

This is why we are fully committed to breaking down barriers and offering inclusive and compassionate care for all those we serve.

At Duke Health we stand together, always celebrating our differences & taking pride in your health.

If your child or friend was a type 1 diabetic, would you want someone legislating whether they can access needed healthcare?

With a wave of anti-trans bills sweeping states across the country, the two things we need to actively be doing is calling our representatives to oppose these bills and learning how to be the best ally to trans and non-binary youth, children and adults.

Transgender children and youth have alarmingly high su***de rates, but those receiving gender confirming mental and physical health treatment have lower rates than those not in treatment. These bills, including one proposed in Raleigh yesterday, will lead to an increase in su***de.

Those of us at Duke Family Medicine we will do whatever we can to stop this already vulnerable group of people from further attacks, and to continue providing access to needed healthcare.

The first step to becoming an ally to transgender and nonbinary people is to learn more; thank you for taking that step with us! It […]
