Pastor Genevia Boyd: A Champion for Black History, Education, and Community Empowerment
Dr. Genevia M. Boyd’s life reflects the enduring power of faith, education, and cultural pride. Born and raised in Palm Beach County, Florida, she emerged as a leader committed to ensuring that Black history is not marginalized but celebrated as an essential part of the American story. A 1973 graduate of Glades Central High School, she continued her academic journey at Florida Memorial University, an HBCU, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary/Early Childhood and Gifted Education in 1976. Her HBCU experience strengthened her cultural identity and affirmed her belief that education must uplift, empower, and tell the full truth of history.
For 22 years, Dr. Boyd served in the public school system, teaching in predominantly white schools where representation and inclusive curricula were often limited. In those spaces, she intentionally incorporated Black history and culture into her instruction, ensuring that Black students saw themselves reflected in excellence and achievement. She understood that when children know their history, they gain confidence, purpose, and power. Her classroom became a place where heritage was honored, and identity was affirmed.
Her commitment to cultural education extended beyond the classroom. Dr. Boyd hosted a Black History Day in the Glades area that brought together more than 1,000 children, creating a powerful space for celebration, education, and community pride. Through this initiative, she planted seeds of knowledge and self-worth in a new generation, reinforcing that Black history is rich with innovation, resilience, and global impact.
For over 45 years, Dr. Boyd has been a transformative leader in both the church and the broader community. She has served as General Youth Director for Worldwide Christian Ministries. She has worked with the Empowerment Alliance, Inc. of South Florida, the Hendry County Student Advisory Committee, the Department of Juvenile Justice, and other community-based organizations. Her advocacy spans social justice, criminal justice reform, youth empowerment, and equal rights, always centering the needs of marginalized communities.
Her passion for community development is evident in the impactful programs she has created, including the Christian Achievement Motivation Program (C.A.M.P.I & II), First Class Males, Compassionate Friends, and Women Informed for Everything (W.I.F.E) School. Each initiative was designed to foster leadership, academic excellence, personal growth, and spiritual empowerment. Understanding the healing power of the arts, she also founded the Miracle Deliverance Center School of Liturgical Dance and the Genevia Boyd Liturgical Arts & Dance Company, providing youth with creative outlets for expression, confidence-building, and restoration.
Dr. Genevia M. Boyd embodies Black History not only through words, but through action. Her legacy is one of advocacy, cultural affirmation, and unwavering dedication to educational equity. She has spent her life ensuring that Black children know their worth, communities know their strength, and history is taught with truth and pride. Through her leadership, countless lives have been empowered, and her impact will continue to shape generations to come.
