Scientists at Duke University School of Medicine, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Johns Hopkins Medicine have identified a specific cell type in the eye that may play a key role in glaucoma progression.

The research, led in part by Duke Ophthalmology’s Daniel Stamer, PhD, shows that supporting these cells with vitamin B3 helped reduce eye pressure and signs of disease in a genetic model of glaucoma.

The findings offer new hope for strategies to slow vision loss in the future.

Today, we reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and compassion. His vision reminds us that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life.

As Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” and at Duke Health, we strive to carry forward this notion by ensuring access to quality care for all.

From December 4–13, Lloyd Williams, MD, PhD, and Duke Global Ophthalmology fellow Sheena Song, MD, traveled to South Sudan as part of a sight‑restoring mission working with Cure Blindness.

During the trip, the team helped support 1,400 sight‑saving surgeries.

This work is part of a growing partnership aimed at dramatically expanding access to eye care in the region. Plans for 2026 include a large‑scale collaboration projected to support nearly 9,000 surgeries, helping restore vision for thousands more.

We’re grateful to our partners and proud of the Duke GO team’s commitment to eliminating avoidable blindness around the world.
