Sharon Fekrat, MD from Duke’s iMIND Research Group was asked to comment on the recent Nature Communications study in a FoxNews piece, speaking as a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She highlighted how early research linking infection-related inflammation and Alzheimer’s could help scientists better understand disease progression and “lead to new ways to detect or treat Alzheimer’s in the future,” while emphasizing this doesn’t prove infections cause Alzheimer’s.

Watch:

A common pneumonia-causing bacteria was found in the eyes and brains of Alzheimer’s patients, potentially worsening inflammation and cognitive decline.

Dr. John Karickhoff, MD’64, HS’64–’68, has always believed that innovation drives medicine forward. His recent $1 million gift to launch the Duke Ocular Innovation Hub at Duke Eye Center will help trainees and faculty turn new ideas into breakthroughs that advance eye care for patients everywhere.

Throughout his career as a surgeon, teacher, and humanitarian, Dr. Karickhoff has shaped ophthalmology through invention and generosity. His support now ensures that future innovators at Duke have the tools and mentorship to carry that legacy forward.

Stories like this remind us how donor generosity fuels discovery, education, and patient care across Duke Health. On February 12, during our annual Thank‑a‑thon, we’ll be calling donors to say thank you for all they make possible.
